I've been told that searches for short strings take too many computing resources on the server side. That may be true for whatever software is involved, but all it really means to me is that somebody chose the wrong software for the job.

The search that is built-in to vbulletin doesn't scale very well. Neither of their options works very well on larger forums. The default search creates an index of every word and it's location. By limiting the number of characters, you can increase it's performance. The optional mysql fulltext search option can be better but it still has serious limitations on larger forums.

I guess, after further thought, 3-letter terms are usually 'anded' with other, longer terms so, as long as they aren't ignored under those circumstances, it's OK.

maybe if a filter were made to ignore sole terms like 'the', 'and', maybe 'car' ,etc. but allow the more pertinent terms?

just wondering.
