Price is a bit high in my opinion. Have the headgaskets been changed? If not are the current ones leaking oil or coolant externally? (weak point for the 4cyl engines) Has the timing belt, idler pulleys & tensioner been changed? (due every 105K miles or 105 months)

^^^ good post

You should think of it as a 12 year old used car first. Not OMG! SUBARU !!! ,all used cars can have the same issues with poor maintenance in the past and/or lurking problems in the present.

That said, good dealers will often only keep better cars on the lot, sending the worse ones to the auction house.

If you have a good independent soob-experienced mechanic in the area, paying him to do a pre-purchase inspection might be a good idea.

As for negotiation, you can't get much on an older car, but you could try to get and xtra year added to the 2/24, or a set of tires, or get them to do the timing belt (which is WAY overdue by the 'time' side of the maint. schedule, 105 months)

Sounds like you will be using the car like the prev. ownr did so, make sure to use the time side of the schedule for maint. Low usage is considered 'severe duty' because seals can dry out, moisture can collect in fluids, etc.

^ Agree with 1 Lucky Texan. Get that Subaru to an independent dealer who can take a look at it; don't take the word of this dealer that such-and-such maintenance was done.

If the dealer is pushing you take it off the lot today and does not want you to take a good look at the car, inside and out, what do you think that means??! RUN AWAY.

^ Probably for the better; take your time and do the research before making a purchase.

Just wondering, do you haul a lot of stuff or live somewhere with rough weather most of the year? If you're driving mostly 5 miles a day, why not get a smaller, more efficient car?

read some bad ones!

Seriously, they are good cars but there are trouble spots, read up before you commit.

5 miles per day will be hard on any car, since it will hardly reach normal operating temps. Not a show stopper, but something to think about.

If your looking at around 2001 model yr and only commute 5 miles daily, add the H6 OB to your list of cars to look for. Never hv to worry abt the head gasket and timing belt replacement.
