When we drive our 09 Outback for several hours, we start smelling burning oil as we drive. I have followed our car to see if I can see any kind of smoke but there is none. There is no oil leaking on the ground & I can't seem to see any on the outside of the engine. Any ideas?

Split cv boots have grease in them that smell like a roofing tar project the smell is really skunky and pungent.

Engine oil is more mild in odor. Given the age my first thought is valve cover gaskets. They typically start leaking around the spark plugs which pass through the valve cover and have a round gasket under the valve cover.
