SoCal Wilderness buyers. $5k over MSRP?

5347 Views 51 Replies 32 Participants Last post by  DugsSin
I just got a quote from Glendale Subaru (The largest Subaru dealer in the world) and they want $5000 over MSRP. I'm totally new to Subaru, is that how most dealers are? I'm in San Diego but willing to drive north if anyone has any suggestions.

This is my first post but I've learned so much lurking on this forum. Thank you all in advance.

If you belong to Costco, then try their referral system. For $5K you could rent a car to wait for the prices to go down.
On the Costco note... Dealers around me were giving Costco members invoice pricing. While noting this is not as good as VIP, it is pretty close and has no haggling involved.

Are dealers accepting the Wilderenss into the costco program? When the Colorado ZR2 came out it was not being allowed to be included into the program for several months after launch.

Not sure, but they are allowing VIP so I assume they would.
People buying new cars in this market? Why?
Same reason they are paying $250K over asking for a house. FOMO.

Homes, cars, furniture, appliances - bidding wars seem to be the thing. And the more people hear about bidding wars and over MSRP, the more they JUST HAVE TO HAVE IT. Im not intending this to be a political point, so keep that in mind, but look how easily people are swayed in politics by rumours or talking heads. It is no different. People need to be a part of whatever is hot.

There's going to be a whole lot of regret and buyers remorse coming down the pipeline. If you have cash on hand now, hold on to it.

The extra $5K will have sales tax added and the registration fee (plates/tag) will be another additional amount (CA Registration Fee Calculator). So in my area of CA it will cost an additional ~$432 for that extra $5K. I hope the state uses the money to help repair our roads.

I haven’t seen too many marked up on the east coast, at least in CT. it may be worth your while to fly somewhere and drive back home. Nice little road trip.
Careful giving out that advice anymore.
Not sure if Subaru's are all 50 state legal.

Washington, D.C., Connecticut, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Arizona, New Mexico, Oregon, Washington and Colorado have all gone with CARB(California) emissions standards.

Not all manufacturers automatically make their vehicles 50 state compliant.

I'm getting my Bronco for 2k under invoice from a dealer in Iowa, but I had to let them know I was in MD to be sure they ordered a CARB emissions vehicle.
Thanks to everyone for the help! The reason I'm shopping for a new car is I'm having health issues and I'm having trouble getting in and out of my Tacoma. Luckily it looks like I will get around $5k more than I paid for my truck 2 years ago so that helps a bit. Thanks for the Costco advice! I didnt even think about that. My spoke to my local Costco Subaru dealer and put my name on an incoming car. It will be for MSRP and I get a $200 credit for accessories and I want the roof crossbars that are $500. I know I could get a better deal by waiting a few months but I really need something now and I'm in love with the wilderness. I went to the dealer and looked at one that was sold and I want one just like it.

Thanks again everyone.

Some of this must be driven by the current car shortage. I’m in CO and was quoted $10k over MARP for a RAV4 Prime and a couple local subaru dealers quoted above MSRP for Outbacks (any of the various turbo models). I ended up using TrueCar and getting 10% off on a Touring XT.

Good work. To be sure though I hope you filled out the Costco form FIRST.

Y’all think $5k over is bad, check this out
Smh but go to trade one in the dealers be like $15k below market value 😒
I just read the chip shortage is just about over over and the chip makers are once again ramping up. The backlog should be filled in the next 30-45 days. At that point car manufacturers will get the chips they need and car prices will stabilize. Apparently the manufacturers are removing chips from all kinds of systems (fuel management, instrument clusters, sensors) and putting in only the bare minimum to keep up with demand.
We expect a write up with pictures when it arrives and how the dogs like her. (y)(y)

There’s a sucker born every day!
Also, a local dealer in Colorado, Valley Subaru, has a bunch of OB Wilderness models in stock and seems to be quoting MSRP. That’s where I bought my Touring XT. It’s a good dealership.

In CO, I paid $1K less than MSRP for my OBW. I had to shop around a few of the dealers, but finally found one.
