This will start as a general question and if it requires me to be more specific then I will gladly include more technical information. I was told that the 2004 Outback Legacy Wagon's 4 cylinder engine had solid lifters. If that is true is it possible to replace the solid lifters with Hyd lifters and still maintain or improve the performance of the engine. If Hyd Lifters are an option will it require any modification to engine to have this done?

Well, for starter the proper oil passages would have to be present to power the lifters. I've never torn into a solid lifter cars, but I know hydraulic lifters use oil ports located within the lifter bore as access for oil pressure. I assume solid lifters have some sort of oiling passage in their bores or else the lifters would seize. I doubt they would be the proper size though.

Basically I have no idea and just rambling. :D
