I’m slowly discovering all the bells and whistles that my 2018 3.6 Touring Outback has. The latest is the speed limit sign that sometimes is displayed on the Nav screen and also next to the digital speed display in the center info screen. Sometimes it is correct and changes as I leave and entire different speed zones. Other times it either doesn’t change, just stays stuck on a certain speed or displays a speed that is not correct. For example last night while in a village with a 30 mph limit, the display was correct. Stopped to pick up a pizza, car turned off, and when starting back up to head home, the display showed I was in a 65mph zone. There isn’t a highway with that limit within 10 miles of me. Is there a setting I need to make or is this one of those head unit gremlins.

That is because DOT has changed the speed limit again since the NAV was updated. Speed limit sign posting is now ridiculous in the US. Sometimes you drive for miles before you see a sign. It wasn't always like this but I suspect it is a revenue producer for tickets.

Yes, Subaru isn't known for top shelf electronics and infotainment systems. Far better to rely on the posted signs rather than what the car is telling you.

That is because DOT has changed the speed limit again since the NAV was updated. Speed limit sign posting is now ridiculous in the US. Sometimes you drive for miles before you see a sign. It wasn't always like this but I suspect it is a revenue producer for tickets.
I believe most states have a "State Speed Limit" which is the default if there are no signs after a specific number of miles. This saves the states from having to post every mile of road.

Here in Vermont, the "State Speed Limit" is 50. Any road not posted is automatically 50 MPH. The towns may be posted as 30.... but after the town, there are no signs and the limit is back to the "State Speed Limit" 50.

New-York state has "State Speed Limit" of 55 which is implemented in a similar way.

If someone feels they were improperly ticketed, they can go to court and PROVE that the distance between signs was so great that it allowed the speed they were traveling.

And basically all GPS nav systems are trying to play catch up with whatever local changes occur to the speed limits, Hwy. exit numbers, etc....

Subaru Nav particularly sucks at it, which is why I opted for a Premium as I really didn’t want the navigation system, among other things.

I like having the speed limit & digital readout right in the center where they are and find them useful. I noticed the errors too and they correspond with my Garmin gps speed limit readout most times. They must use a common database for the info, maybe?
I haven't used the built in NAV but a couple of times, it seems OK. But I far prefer my older garmin stuck in the lower left corner of the windshield. It's so much easier to see there and the function and display are almost perfect, I love it. Combined with my Escort RD and S&W I'm good to go.

Issues addressed here highlight some of the reasons I prefer to use Waze for my navigation needs. Given that the Waze community can update the map info, the data it displays should be more current than most GPS alternatives. (of course there can be downsides to community edits...) With the addition of Android Auto on the 18's, I'm a happy camper since Waze will now display on the vehicle's screen.

I find my Garmin is real good the posting the correct speed limit.

Waze is awesome, but I've seen it (and Google Maps) struggle or completely fail in areas with no cell signal and/or weak GPS reception (e.g., mountainous areas). My Outback's NAV appears to have a more robust GPS receiver than any smartphone I've used (and I'm sure it has a much larger antenna). It's actually never failed me, so I consider it a valuable feature. As for speed limits, I don't trust anything other than road signs for that.;)

Google bought Waze which was a Iranian startup. Google maps today uses updated Waze code for its routing software. Waze actually routes based on user frequency so there are times when the Google maps will be better for ill regular users etc. But in regions with lots of Waze users road data is great, police location, road debri etc.

Not sure anyone was interested in discussing the merits of Waze versus Google, but ok.

My point was simply that, (1) I don't trust anything but the posted limit. And (2), for the critical function of navigation, a smartphone (with its miniaturized GPS system, regular need for a data connection to keep the map moving, and an external power source to keep the battery charged) is not as reliable as a dedicated NAV, which has a complete map built in, along with a no-compromise GPS receiver.

Very true. And a dedicated NAV (with its map that if you're lucky is not more than about three years out of date) is not as reliable as Google Maps, which was updated twenty minutes ago. Horses for courses. (And don't forget that you can download Google Map data to your phone for offline use in dodgy or non-signal areas.)

But how come they still don't provide speed limit info on Google Maps? I'm told they did for a brief period about a year ago, but pulled it.

BTW, I don't recall ever having any trouble getting a GPS lock with my phone. No map with no cell signal, yes, but never any trouble with the actual GPS connection.

There’s a very useful phone GPS app called Co-Pilot. Might be free, but the $6 version is well worth it.

The maps are as good as Google and the navigation and screen functionality blows Google out of the water. It’s a very good app, only complaint is search is not as refined or fast, but nobody is as good as Google in search.

Best thing with Co-Pilot is the maps reside on the phone, so no data required.

Waze sucks as BTW. I’ve tried using it on my commute in NYC. There’s this bad habit it has of telling you there might be 2 or 3 accidents all within a 1/4 mile of each other, when what its reporting is 3 different people reporting the same accident just at slightly different locations as they fumble with the app. As well they want access to everything on your phone including the SS of your kids it seems like. F**k em.

I too am having the speed limit sign errors and it is not related to the DOT. I have 1 road where the Speed limit has been 30mph for at least 40 years but my car says it is 57. I was also in a parking lot and the speed changed to 57. I have a Outback 3.6R Touring. But I have found the radio has all kinds of issues that are just weird at times.

I'm getting a little off-topic, but for those who don't know, it is possible to use a smart phone entirely off-line (the GPS function doesn't need a data stream) for mapping/nav if you have the proper app, such as OsmAnd. That's what I use on my current motorcycle. I have a waterproof/vibration proof phone with no service provider, no data plan, not even a SIM card, that I use exclusively on the bike for nav purposes.

Google Maps lets you download offline maps natively. And I'm kinda sure that when you map a route, it downloads it, so that even if it takes you into a no-cell-signal area it still works. Kinda sure. Maybe.

Of course, it helps to have plenty of storage space in your phone. I have a 128gb microSD in my Samsung. Now if Spotify would just quit deleting my downloaded album files ...
