So I hear some sort of engine cough or rumble or rattle as I start speeding up in 2nd gear. A bit like being in too high a gear for that RPM, but it's not exactly that clunky or loud. (and it's not me shifting too soon)

I've had the transmission rebuilt and checked by the shop maybe 500 miles ago, so I don't think it's actually transmission related... it seems to me like it's engine related, but of course I'm no expert.

I do still need to replace those valve gaskets, could this be another symptom of that?

could be heat shields are buzzing, or you may be hearing pre-ignition - possible bad knock sensor.

more details may help but, noises can be tricky to ID with a description over the internet

post your city and maybe someone can suggest a good shop to take the car to.
