hi, my Outback 2008 2.5i AT recently started producing a bad smell, pretty much only if driven uphill with a bit more throttle. The smell resembles burning tire/plastic and clutch. Anyone with a similar experience?

Possibly you have a torn CV boot or an oil leak that is getting on the exhaust when driven harder.

Possibly.

the 3 things that smell worse than engine oil burning-off are; CV grease, differential lube, and plastic/rubber

(slipping clutch on manual trans)

was any service done to the car recently? could have been some spilled fluid cooking-off.

inspect all fluid levels and look for split CV boots as mentioned. 10 year old boots could easily be split.

DO NOT let anyone just willy-nilly replace an entire axle! Search and educate your self about Subaru axles vs aftermarket before deciding how to proceed.
