I've been looking into doing up the stereo in my Outback, but I was wondering: where should I mount a sub? I don't want it to be in the way of using it for hauling stuff (after all why else would I own a wagon?) but under the seat seems like a good way to vibrate my passengers. Any guys done this before?

There was a factory one offered that goes under the passenger seat, and from what I can tell of the parts list diagrams I've seen the McIntosh audio equipped cars seem to have had one in place of the right rear storage compartment.

Behind driver's seat

I determined that the passenger seat behind the driver is rarely occupied so I had a sealed sub-woofer enclosure made to sit in its footwell. The box is level with the back seat and acts like a mini table. I matched the front slope of box to the angle of the driver's seat back. Sub-woofer is firing downwards with a two inch clearance off the floor. It moves to the cargo area whenever I need that fourth seat.
