Was changing the POS chinese single row bearing timing idlers/geared pulley and tensioner today in my '99 OBW.
When tightening the geared pulley the bolt didn't seem to tighten correctly, felt like it was going to strip the threads. Knowing how important these are I pulled the bolt out and cleaned the threads, nothing seemed wrong. I threaded the bolt back in without the pulley and it threaded in all the way without issue.
Upon inspecting the geared pulley I noticed a recess in one face of the pulley
The other side of the pulley had a shoulder
Apparently I had put the pulley wrong side against the block. I do believe that if I had not noticed this the timing belt may have jumped time.
Always worth checking things out when they don't feel right.
