Not to start a political thread here (election's over - thank God), but I've never seen a Subaru with a Romney/Ryan bumper sticker.

My brother who lives in Vermont told me they are the "state car" there. I'm a liberal, artist, sailing, Mac using, dude with a golden retriever that rides nearly everywhere with me in the back of the Sube. So, I guess I had to get this car.

As for fording streams like the pic, I don't drive into standing water, or grab downed power lines, or run into burning buildings. That guy looks like he's trying to win a Darwin award.

Come out to my part of the county sometime. I know a couple that still have McCain/Pailin stickers next to the Romney/Ryan ones. A couple even still have Bush ones. There are also plenty with ***** and John Kerry. I think I have seen a Gore sticker running around.

At least here, people don't by them to make a statement. People buy them because snow doesn't care about your voter registration. When the weather is bad, guess who is out on the road?

P.S. One car you don't see on the road here in bad weather is the Prius. Oddly enough, there are a couple Volts in my town and I see those out in bad weather more than I do the Priuses, and there are a lot more of the Priuses than the Volts.

I live in MN so I am constantly driving in snow, water, ice, dirt roads, muddy two tracks etc. I love watching all the guys with their 4x4 trucks with cheap lifts and glass packs go in the ditch on a snowy highway after apparently not realizing the 4x4 doesn't help you stop! Anyways from many years of winter driving I never thought I would feel the need for AWD since a front FWD car with good tires and a competent driver shouldn't have problems most of the time. That all changed when I got the subie and drove on unplowed streets after an 18" snowstorm and up and down hills etc. The AWD makes this thing almost unstoppable in snow and with the power shifting for traction I'll take it anyday over true 4WD for snow/ice/rain etc. These days when a storm hits and they advise no travel I delight in taking out the car to run errands while the stores are all empty!

I consider myself VERY liberal. Sometimes I feel like I need to remind people what the definition of the word liberal is:

1. favorable to progress or reform, as in political or religious affairs.

2. ( often initial capital letter ) noting or pertaining to a political party advocating measures of progressive political reform.

3. of, pertaining to, based on, or advocating liberalism, especially the freedom of the individual and governmental guarantees of individual rights and liberties.

4. favorable to or in accord with concepts of maximum individual freedom possible, especially as guaranteed by law and secured by governmental protection of civil liberties.

5. favoring or permitting freedom of action, especially with respect to matters of personal belief or expression: a liberal policy toward dissident artists and writers.

What most libertarians don't realize is they are actually, very, VERY liberal. Every time I hear someone equate "liberal" to "socialist", it really really pisses me off.

I am a liberal, a classical liberal. As far as political platform... I go with whichever candidate I feel I like the best, based on their political stances. In 2008 I was a supporter of O-Bama. In 2012 I was a supporter of Gary Johnson.
I can absolutely respect voting for Johnson. I came very close to doing so myself. Of course, in MA it's almost irrelevant since a democrat will always win the electoral vote.

I consider myself a "conservative" libertarian because though I personally am on the opposing side of many of the heated issues today, I acknowledge that they don't have any impact on me and the government shouldn't have any reason to say "no" either.

I often think of liberal as being "liberal toward the size and scope of government" and "liberal with the amount of taxes taken," both of which I absolutely oppose. I just don't think the redistribution of wealth (what I call the "Robin Hood" philosophy) is ethical, fair, or right. Nor is the fiscal irresponsibility that is so prevalent today.

So. Your post has officially dragged me out of lurker-dom. I couldn't resist. Been lurking about 8 months here, bought a Subaru 2 months ago, but didn't really plan on joining....until just now.

Set up an account....THEN, I got up off my couch at 3 minutes past midnight, went OUTSIDE in the 14 degree South Dakota night with my cell phone and a flashlight, wearing only pajamas and flip-flops...JUST so I could take a picture of my newly acquired motor vehicle and one of its recent sticker adornments, and post it on this forum.

Clearly, you are inside my friggin' brain or something, because "not wanting my fellow South Dakotans to mistake me for a progressive/liberal/democrat based on the car I drive...eeeeven if a Subaru stereotype doesn't really exist here because there are so few on the road that they're almost a novelty"....was my EXACT thought & a large part of my motivation for putting this sticker on my window.

That, and it was actually a gift from my roommate who is kind of a zealous obsessive fanboy for all things Rand, Beck and Wilcow...I *like* the same & think along similar lines, I am a registered libertarian gun toting freedom advocating independent stubborn woman....but have never QUITE been the type to latch on to another person's words/philosophy with rabid, cult-like adoration the way my roommate tends to. :)
But, free stickers are free stickers, I was appreciative of the gift, I do actually like the book very much....and it worked for the "theme" I was aiming for with the other stickers on my Outback....so all's good. :)

Oh, yah by the way....HI EVERYBODY *waves*....nice to meetya, being as this is my first post here figured I'd be polite and say hello. Name's Danielle, I drive a 2008 Outback 2.5i. I have four dogs, a husband and a messy roommate and a whole lot of freakish little Satan birds who generate income and try to eat people's souls. Pleasure to be here.

Maybe I'll even come back and post once in a while, now that I know for sure there are some folks here whom I'd have more in common with than just our really good taste in cars :)
I too have a 2008, and we definitely think alike! I'm not really a fan of stickers or anything, but I'm really tempted to find a subtle one with that sort of message for a window.

I think that, in a way, the car helps my case. After all, Subaru was thriving during the same time that GM was being bailed out. They're also committed to the environment on their own accord (not because of some government mandate), and are investing in this country (building a huge NJ parts distribution center right now).

Well, I have a "Death to Tyranny" sticker as well as a "Go back to sleep....Your Government is in charge". Not to mention my personalized license plate is GOV2BIG. Keep the faith.
I love it! :29:

Anyway, back on topic. I don't think we need a whole lot of politics on a car forum...

Last week when I picked up my new car, this was the sequence of events: I finished eating my Clif-Bar, put on my flannel shirt, hopped on my bike and rode to REI to pick up a new BPA-free water bottle, then rode to Subaru to pick up my new Outback. True story.

I've met a lot of different people that drive Subarus. Personally, I live in a mountainous region and I enjoy outdoor activities. This often requires me to drive long distances away from the city and periodically engage in driving off of paved roads. I feel there are some whose requirements are similar, but who don't hold true to the same cliche as I first described above.

LOL - very true! We always take the subaru when its looking like a snow storm is going to roll through. 4x4 part time truck doesn't handle the on road snow anywhere near as good as the full time AWD system the subaru has. However my old AWD Land Cruiser was a close second handled and drove beautifully in the snow.

In Portland, older Subies, Outbacks, Imprezas, and Foresters are driven by leftists/socialists (I'll refrain from calling them "liberals" out of respect for the true, classical liberals on here). Green Foresters are driven by lesbians. Not kidding... even a friend at the local Subaru garage says the same. The WRX/STIs are driven, naturally, by young males of the performance persuasion, politics notwithstanding.

Out here in the Gorge, Subarus are driven by anyone who needs a utilitarian vehicle to haul the kids/dogs/bicycles/camping gear/etc around in all sorts of weather, nice or nasty. It's mountainous, and frequently snowy and icy in winter. Yeah, there's a lot of tree-huggers out here (notably in Hood River), but otherwise most of us are huntin'-campin'-fishin'-wheelin' country folk of the right-wing persuasion.

Still... I make enough trips into Portland that I am trying to convince my wife to let me put something blindingly right-wing/libertarian on the back of the car. "This Vehicle Insured By S&W", for example. I like the "who is John Galt?" idea.

This is, in small part, one of my motivations for going from the 2.5i with the wimpy, greenwashed, eco-wacko "PZEV" logo to the 3.6R... with no such logo. ;-)

Back on topic... gnarliest road I've run the Scooby-doo down was an obscure little offshoot going over Dalles Mountain, called O'brien road. It's basically a wash, with a sign saying it's impassable when wet. Wish I had taken a pic. Maybe I'll do it again this summer and take a pic this time.

My wife and I also have some rough roads here on the 600 acres my father-in-law owns (which we live on and maintain for him). The 2011 had been all over the property. The 2013, not yet. Soon enough. :)
