My "new" 2002 Outback has 144,00 miles on it and after replacing the exhaust donut I can hear clunking from under the front and rear as I go over bumps. What are the usual things that need replacing on these Outbacks at this mileage? I also smell hot oil hitting the exhaust from the front. Thanks - this is a good forum

Sounds like you might have something that worked loose from working on the exhaust. Check all of the supports. A rare coincidence it could be sway bar end links going bad at the same time.

As for the burning oil smell, it's probably the valve cover gasket.

Clunking can be front sway bar end links or front sway bar bushings (that secure the sway bar to the front subframe.) Burning oil can be from leaking valve cover gasket or, more likely if they are original, front axle dust boots split and spitting grease onto the exhaust.
