My girlfriend has an 07 outback that the power steering pump is going on. I've pretty much done nothing like this on a car before but am competent at teaching myself to do things. I havent got to look at it yet but I've heard they use a plastic pulley system that is extremely difficult to press on without breaking. Is this something I should take to a shop? Or is it relatively easy as I've been told most power steering pumps are? I'm confident in my ability to do most things after researching them, but a friend of mine who is a big car hobbyist said the plastic pulleys that are pressed on are extremely easy to break and my be too big of a headache.

I'm not sure if this is right section of the forum but I'm mainly asking if how difficult the plastic pulley system is to deal with.

I can't answer the pulley question, but I wonder what makes you think the pump is failing and has to be replaced?

Perhaps it's something else, such as leaky o-rings at the hose fittings, or contaminated fluid.
