The replacement engine arrived today for my son's 09 OB 2.5i SOHC. Donor vehicle is an 08 Legacy. One thing my son noticed is that the engine/trans locating dowel pin on the pass side is not there on this engine. It is there on the driver's side. Does this normally remain in the engine block on both sides or...? If it normally remains on the engine is this easy to remove and reuse from the junked engine that we will be removing?

Re-using an old dowel is acceptable. Not unusual to have them stick in the mating part.
There are a few different tricks to removing them. You can drill and tap the center for a jack screw. You can pound them out hydraulically. You can buy a dowel pin removing tool. Occasionally you can remove the with vice grips.
Rather than going into detail here, I'd suggest a YouTube search.
