After changing the oil this last weekend, I was doing my normal wiping down of the engine, checking the fluids, etc. When I thought, it's getting close to change the transmission fluid here soon....I ought to check to see how the color looks. Looked for a bit...no dipstick?!?!?!?

Soooooo, how do you check the transmission fluid on these? Mine is an '02 H6-3.0 Sedan.

Thanks for your help.

Dipstick should be there on the drivers side of the transmission (for US or left hand drive) just in front of the fire wall. It will have a yellow loop on top so as you can pull it up with your finger.

You must check the transmission oil when the car is up to temperature AND WHILST THE ENGINE IS RUNNING. It should be between the two marks on the dipstick as indicated. Read your manual for the correct procedure!

Lance is correct, in the U.S. it is on the driver's side directly behind the engine cover and in front of the firewall. Also of note, from personal experience, DO NOT try to change the fluid out yourself unless you absolutely know for sure what you are doing ;)

Thanks...I'll "put my eyes back in & take another look". Just didn't see it the first time.:bonk:

I wasn't planning on doing myself...dealer did the recall on the transmission lock...from what i could tell they took the whole console out in addition to changing the fluid.

Transmission Oil Change

Changing the Transmission is not that bad. I have 04 OBW H6 and today I changed the fluid for the second time the last time was 30, 000 kms ago. If you buy a funnel with a built in hose to reach the Trans dipstick hole to fill the trans up no big deal to do the fluid change. The only question I have is where is the Transmission Filter located. Bought a filter at my local parts store but I can't find the filter, any help out there?

Nancydrew,

The transmission filter is located in front of the driver side wheel well / fender by the left fog light.

If your 2010 has 2.5 engine with the CVT transmission, there is no dipstick for the transmission or for the front differential.

See: http://www.subaruoutback.org/forums/99-do-yourself-illustrated-guides/52020-2011-2-5i-cvt-differential-fluid-change.html

The previous posts refer to the earlier 4-speed AT or the 5-speed AT. (There was no CVT at that time.)
