I called the local Subaru Dealer and ask what the actual temp of the coolant should be when at the middle of the gauge (optimum range)? He said the temp should be anywhere from 212-220F for the coolant temp. Above 220F the gauge will go to the next bar and it tops out at 250 in which case your engine is done... well done. This seems to track my experience. Using an OBDII blue tooth and live stats I watch my temp from 206-215 (mostly at or under 212). The entire time gauge on the dash was right in the middle at operating temp.
