The engine light is in on all the time. The abs, brakes and battery light come on will driving only. Everything but the engine light goes out when stopped or in neutral. After driven for a bit there is an odd smell. 2000 Outback Legacy 227k Miles. I’ve had it for one year and the previous original owner took immaculate care of all systems. Can any body give some suggestions?

Dito codes. With the battery light on, there is high probability that the battery and or alternator are bad, but, you'll need to scan the car for the codes before you disconnect the battery for anything. Poor electrical supply will cause all kinds of things to happen with the car.

alternator issue seems possible - old belt slipping - even a slipping crank pulley die to delaminated 2-piece construction.

try measuring voltage at the battery while someone revs the engine.

get the code(s) read, post them here.
