I have the same car, but a '99. I've been getting about 20-22 average. I can get about 272 miles before I get scared and fill the tank. This car does better on mileage than my '04 auto.

My OB is a stock 2013. Only have about 3500 miles so far. I drive a fair amount of highway at 70-80 mph most of the time. My worst tank was 24.5 with almost all stop and go with a lot of traffic. My best has been 34. My average over my total milage has been 27mpg. In general I am not a lead foot. With the CVT at 70mph I am running just a bit over 2k rpm on flat ground. For AWD I think these things do pretty good.

We have two Gen1s.

My father's '98 Outback Limited Automatic gets 23 MPG, my sister's '98 Legacy GT Wagon (also automatic) gets 24 MPG. Both of them seem very consistent with that figure and both drive some minor city/stop-and-go and 45-50 MPH highway. In my opinion both have feather-light feet.

Wife would only drive her '97 OBW exactly 65 mph (as indicated on the uncorrected speedo, roughly 8% optimistic). Mileage was consistent 31 mpg using non-ethanol fuel, until my "close enough" cam seal job proved not to be & damaged too much to salvage.

I hate to say this but most your figures will be 1-2mpg off because the factory speedometer is so far off ... :28:

Im getting around 21 Mpg with a 246k 96 2.2 5spd outback in mixed driving.Having some drivability issues I need to address to get it any higher. Not the 38mpg my 91 Civic got or the 16mpg the 91 jimmy I had.So Its a somewhat happy medium.

2012 3.6R Outback stock as from factory. During break in for first 2000 miles about 24mpg town and highway. Next 2400 miles was towing a 2200 lb utility trailer across south Idaho to Oregon down to Crater Lake then on down US 395 via Las Vegas then to Yuma,Az. Hand calculated average on the 2400 miles was 20 mpg. Have not had a long trip without trailer yet.
