HI
What oil do i use for my 2004 6cyl. 3.0, manual says 5w-30 preferred however, i will be towing a boat about once every 2 weeks. manual says for towing should increase oil viscosity. Also i am in Australia where even in the winter the lowest temperature we get in my area is about 44degrees Fahrenheit.

no towing, but I run 5-30 synth in the winter, and Shell Rotella T-6 5-40 in the summer here in Texas.

5W-40 synthetic year around.

The 5W-40 recommendation is largely due to the warm climate in Australia. If your temps dropped to 32*F., I would recommend a 0W-30 or 5W-30 synthetic.

Good luck with your 2004 Outback!

thanks, in sydney if temps dropped to 32*F, then something would be seriously wrong. :)

I think i will go with the 5w-40, seeing as we don't get relatively cold winters, and i will be towing, also Penrite has this 5w-40 full synthetic enviro oil that states something like -"can use where 5-30 & 10w-30 oils are recommended" Don't know how it works but this way i can kill 3 birds with one stone. :)
