I need to order a clutch for the 97. I keep seeing some kind of sleeve repair kit or something where I need to measure the input shaft. I take it there has been some kind of issue with this? Can someone explain this to me?

If the release bearing is worn out baldy enough it can damage the the housing of the transmission where the input shaft is. the sleeve goes over it so the release bearing doesn't flop around. I have done a few n/a Subaru clutches and I have yet to need a sleeve kit but it could happen.

I think they call that a "quill". And yeah, haven't needed one yet either. Turn the flywheel, throw in a new Sachs clutch kit, lube the quill and be done with it.
