Having just bought a 3rd gen Subaru Outback 2.5i in the Netherlands, I was wondering which engine I have got.
The car is a 2004 Subaru Outback 2.5i. (gen 3 arrived earlier here than in the US)

It's a SOHC engine with 165 hp (121 kW) @ 5600 rpm, 167 ft·lbf (226 N·m) torque @ 4400 rpm. Compression ratio 10,0:1

I used to think that it was an EJ254 but that seems to be incorrect, at least the SOHC 254 variant is removed from wikipedia supposed to be nonexistent.

This engine was used in all Dutch 2.5i Outbacks till 2009 (we don't have the turbo version over here).

Anybody a clue?

Nope, no idea. Try Euro Subaru forums? Just for reference, here in USA the 2nd gen 2004 models had 165hp. In 2005 (our 3rd gen) it was upped to 170hp. So it sounds like you might have the USA version of the 2nd gen engine, if that makes any sense. I'm just guessing here.

I have just found out that the engine which I have was used in Australian Outbacks and Liberties as well.

It doesn't seem to be the USA 2nd gen 2004 model which is the EJ251. The EJ251 has maximum torque (226nm) at 4000 rpm instead of 4400 rpm.

Is there a metal tag under your hood listing VIN, Engine Model, Transmission Model, Paint Codes, etc?

I will have to check when I pick it up :)
(It's in storage right now. It's a replacement for my company car (Alfa Giulietta) which I'm turning in since I'm changing jobs)

Turns out on my 2008 it's no longer a metal tag under the hood. It's a label on the passenger's side front door.

Here's mine, of course it won't tell you anything since mine's got the H6:

Interestingly enough, it lists my engine model as EZ30DBCEGB when it's definitely an EZ30R. Hmmm...

I also found out on this Ukranian parts shop that my engine is very likely to be one of 2 manual transmission EJ253 variants out of a total of no less then 16 variants!!! edit: even 30 variants.
The engine in my car is very likely to be the:
EJ253ASAFB or the EJ253CSAFB. I just cannot find the specs on them, just replacement prices.
