My 04 outback ****** w 154,000 miles is starting to develop a whine upon cold startup. The fluid level appears to be full, possibly a tad bit over. Ill double check the fluid when I can get it on a more level surface. I'm a Subie Newbie, but fairly mechanically inclined. Where should I start?

look for bubbles/foam in the PS tank while idling.

common complaint with 2-3 causes, the most common is a leak on the suction side, often an o-ring on the hose adpater on top of the pump.

do a search for the problem - many posts about it here.

+1 ^ above. It could also be the pulley bearings, but o-ring seems the most common cause for the H6.
