I modded mine at 178k miles. The longevity of the boxer is still unknown. Some members of this forum have done their first timing chain guides/tensioners at over 300k miles and the chain didn't show signs of stretching and the water pumps still looked new. Its all in the maintenance performed through the life of the car that determines how much you get from it.

Why? I like your signature line, "fast doesn't happen by accident". If you waste enough money you can certainly make it faster than it is now but you won't make it "fast" by any stretch of the imagination. Just not a good starting point.
And why would it be a "waste" of money? How does it compare to buying a 72" flat screen to go in a 10x14 living room? Or maybe that sofa set with the cup holder in the arm rest, leather and heated cushion? How about buying a car, say a Vette or Saleen, maybe the 986 Boxster, and letting it sit in the garage to rot instead of driving it? It's an investment that will be worth more if the mileage is low as it ages. Yeah, right. Its a car that will need more work due to sitting than if it had been driven regularly. A real waste of money is a 2k+ sq ft home on the golf course and you don't play golf , you have to pay membership and HOA fees regardless and the commute to work sucks.

That's my opinion.

People choose what to spend their money on based on satisfaction. Sometimes its a short term oops, sometimes its a long term gratification.

And your last bit is incorrect, "won't make it "fast" by any stretch of the imagination.". Who's imagination? The guy who's not afraid to try something different and new, or the guy who's afraid to change things up a bit? And what is the threshold on fast?

Someone has to spend money to make a difference. And no one knows where that difference will lead until you start. :wink2:

My opinion.... Without a solid foundation one is just wasting time and money. An OB is not a good foundation.
Mine worked out really good. I can keep up with the A6s, STIs and others on the road. It grips exceptionally well. And now that I've gotten the ECM to see within 1 psi of actual boost values, the fueling is MUCH better which relates to more power to the ground. And what other Outback with an EZ30D can cruise effortlessly at 120+ mph? Its still a practical car for daily driving along with being able to fit whatever I need in the rear. Gets decent fuel mileage, too, on E85 or gasoline. I wouldn't take it off road. I don't have any reason to go off road. It will still tackle the sands of Padre Island just fine. 31k miles and zero engine issues. High compression engine can't handle boost my arse.
