Oooh. That's good to know. I'll have to experiment with that. Due to COVID-19, being a non-essential worker and working from home for the last 5 weeks (now furloughed), my almost 4 month old Touring XT only has 1700 miles on it. Not much driving going on right now due to stay at home orders. And gas prices are down to $2.49/gal in Southern California. That's downright cheap for us but doesn't compare to other parts of the country.

Haha... If we're going down the customer friendly path, make all these selections optional and save them. I'm the owner that has disabled hill assist, eye sight, hates adaptive cruise, and on and on. Having owned 11 Subarus, we now buy older models rather than putting up with the crap. I like being able to adjust climate controls without taking my eyes off the road, havibg eyesight try to drive me into a barrier (twice), or not let me in my garage (good ole collision avoidance.)

I guess I will have to get in the habit that one poster here does, ie: Turn OFF Auto Start and turn ON AVH every time you start the car. If I remember he posted, when we were all complaining, about A/S - that if you are too pissy to do this procedure - think about the pioneers - or something to that effect

To each their own. AVH is a feature I tried once and quickly turned off. ( I noted even rougher starts when it was on BTW). I for one am happy it is defaulted off. That said, I don't know why they can't set the software to stay where it was last left. Wow, maybe if my Audio Equalizer would only work that way.......

Similar to my newly purchased 2020 Outback Touring XT, both my 2015 Genesis G80 and 2017 Lincoln MKz had Auto Hold, which defaulted back to "off" every time the car was started. My biggest peeve with the Outback is that it doesn't remember the desired map orientation.

I'm not sure about the 2020 model in Australia but my 2018 Outback's default setting is AVH on, S/S on. But AVH only kicks in with S/S so the engine stops at the lights and then the handbrake comes on. If S/S is turned off AVH is disabled as well. A separate function is the hill holder which needs to be switched on. Applies the handbrake on a hill.

Yeah I dunno. It's way smoother for me if my foot is off the brake. Either because I've moved it to the gas to start moving or I have AVH on and just sitting there. It's the worst shudder if I have my foot on the brake and it decides to start back up.

It's also improved a ton after the first few thousand miles.

Relaxing. When stopped at a light or drive thru you don't have to keep your foot on the brake. It also makes it easier if you leave start-stop on to not accidentally restart the engine varying foot pressure when stopped.

I like it so much I'm getting used to turning it on everytime I drive(2 button pushes).

Start moving if AVH isn't engaged, which only is engaged at a full stop. But when you take your foot off the brake if not engaged it's not like the car takes off on you at a fast speed. On the instrument panel you get indicator lights to show the system is on and also when engaged and holding the car. Don't knock it till you try it.

This is (sort of) funny, I'm like @SilverOnyx , I hate the AVH for most scenarios.

I immediately turned this off (my driveway is steep-ish, and I have to do a back-forth maneuver, and AVH holds WAY too long when I'm doing that, and releases with a big POP, almost alarming), but it won't stick-off, for me. Sometimes when I back out it's dis-engaged, maybe 60% of the time, but the other 40%, it just kicks-in, despite the s/w setting being OFF, still, clearly there's a default-firmware-bug here.

I probably wouldn't have quite so much disdain for it, if I could set it and have it stay off, but that's just not in the cards, at this point in the firmware cycle. The 2020 is a REALLY buggy implementation, as a 30+ year s/w and h/w engineering guy...

My setting stays off, like yours, but I have never suspected that AVH was turning itself on. Could you be more specific about what to look for? I'm wondering if either mine is turning itself on and I'm not noticing (is it subtle??) or if yours is behaving very differently, or if maybe your sticky braking issue is not AVH but something else, like a sticky caliper?

I use AVH all the time on my '18 Touring. It works like this. When you are at a stop, press hard on the brake pedal and it automatically holds the car at a stop without holding it with your foot. When you're ready to go just use the accelerator and the car will move off smoothly. This only works if you are using Adaptive Cruise Control at the time.

Touring XT has hill start assist, I think. I cannot find any reference of that in manual. I googled, but not specific to 2020 outback. Where can I find out more about? Is there any way to turn it off? I see the instruction for older model but not for 2020.
