I have a 2012 Outback Premium with 6 speed manual. Backup lights were not working. I have added an ATOTO A6 headset which I've connect the steering wheel controls except for phone answer, hangup.
I really like having backup camera especially for parallel parking and backing from a pulling space.
Steps I used to solve the problem:
Search on Backup light issues on this site. On manual transmission, the front switch on the left side of the transmission is the reverse switch.
The connector for the reverse switch is located on the slight right back side where engine connects to transmission. There are 2 snap-in connectors. The gray one is the backup switch.
Disconnect the snap-in connector and use a jumper wire across the terminals of the female side with key in run position. If lights now come on, the switch is bad.
I bought a new switch from Subaru Parts online site. Takes a 19mm end wrench to remove. Mine had no il drip out so it's a fairly clean fix.
I now have backup lights and camera which makes me happy.
What I learned is start at the least labor intensive idea and work forward. Bulbs can be a problem but to get to them the rear panel must be removed and since both lights were not working, bad bulbs seemed to be probably not the problem. I did replace the bulbs with some brights LED's. Will see what they do when it's dartk.
