Here's an ebay auction for the damper, with several photos that might help you determine where that piece fits in. I think I see it on the end of the cylinder where the rod slides out.

Hey all, I was a klutz when replacing my cabin air filter and was a bit too forceful removing the glove box.

I am still trying to figure out which part of the glove box removal needs any force. The damper doesn't and neither does squeezing the sides of the glove box.

 

I forgot to remove the damper attachment from thr glove box itself, so i just pulled down after squeezing the sides. My previous car was like that so I just assumed
