So, I did one thing potentially that may have fixed it for me -- so far, it has been good. In addition to deleting the existing pairing and re-pairing on the phone and car side -- on the head unit itself, I performed the "Reset all settings" or whatever its called. And then set the pairing up again.. And so far, through several calls - its been OK.
This did not provide a fix for me. Its still doing the same thing, on just about every phone call. The only solution I have found to be reliable is before making the call, changing the connection on the Outback from "CarPlay" to just "Bluetooth" and making the call that way.

If it occurs while in "CarPlay", I have to pick the phone up, change the audio source from "CarPlay" to either "Speaker" or "iPhone" and then back to "CarPlay" and the microphone works again.

One thing I also thought fixed it was not being in CarPlay and just using the Bluetooth connection, but I had the problem reproduce last night during a call without using CarPlay and just using Bluetooth.

I just reported it. Dealer had not heard of this issue. I was luckily able to recreate it when at the dealership. Definitely a Subaru / CarPlay interface issue.
I have reproduced the same with just the iPhone and Bluetooth without CarPlay being on.

So far i did not see any one else have problem with Bluetooth only , if its the case it should affect android users also
as it will be a symptom of microphone in the car get cut out
The question is - has anyone actually tried just using Bluetooth without CarPlay on and trying to reproduce the issue on a phone call? I thought the BT connection was solid - but yet, my called person lost me on two separate phone calls - with the same resolution needed while on CarPlay. This may be an issue specifically with the Apple BT implementation, so Android may not show any similarity. I suggest those that have this issue also try by using BT only and see if it reproduces there.

I have the same issue. I traded in my 2020 Forester for a 2024 Outback. I talked on the phone, in my Forester, on the way to the dealership. A couple of hours later, I was pulling out of the dealership in the Outback and the issues started. I can only talk for a couple of minutes and then the person I am talking with can no longer hear me: it's muted. I am so frustrated and ready to end my relationship with Subaru--this is my third car, and I like to trade in every 4 years. It's not a carplay issue because no one I know has this trouble save for Subaru. ugh.

I reported it. They responded back and said "report this to your dealer"
i replied back asking what the they expect dealer to do if update they provided to dealer is messing it up and no way to undo it...
i rarely make phone calls or answer from the car , but work around for me is swap over to bluetooth if i do need to have a call..

This has become a nagging issue for my 24 OBW as well. Will report to the dealer but I am expecting the, “first we’ve heard of this,” comments. Am also in 17.4.1 and the latest software update for the car. This is recent, so it came with either the last car update or phone update. Also, mic setting while on a call is on STD.

Hey OP. Read all your posts here, I have the same problem with my OBW I purchased March 30. Very frustrating! I haven’t tried clearing the phone resetting factory settings AGAIN and switching to Bluetooth only. I sure didn’t have all these talk problems using Bluetooth in my 2018.
Question, when you use Maps through CarPlay do get audio instructions? I don’t.
Car is going back to the dealer Monday 🤞

Well, it looks like I am getting the runaround now. I contacted Subaru and was told to report this issue to the dealer. I did. Now what? The dealer offered suggestions but they didn't work. What do I do now? Subaru won't help, the dealer can't fix it. I am so sad but I am left with either dealing with it--to me it's a safety issue--or sell it.

2024 Outback Touring I am having the same issue with a changed head unit from the dealer and IOS 17.4.1 on an IPhone 14. It does not happen on an IPhone 12. For now I switch to speaker phone and back to Carplay. I warn my callers of possible interruptions and to wait. Silly technique.

Dropped my new OBW off at the dealer for the 2nd time yesterday for this issue. CarPlay works great with my iPhone in the Ascent loaner they gave me. Will report back if there's a solution with my new car. The solution might have to be a new new car paid for by Subaru
i have same problen in my Ascent too and with all 4 Iphones i have 8 Plus, 12 Pro Max, 13 Pro Max, 14 Pro Max ...
