Cell Phones

We have a 2020 Outback Touring with Navigation. My wife and I each have a cell phone (Android). I want my phone to connect when I am driving and her phone to connect when she is driving. I am not sure how to set that up. We each have own profiles and the seat and mirrors work correctly but the cell phone does not. Especially if I use the car without her in it and my phone is used; then when she gets in the car without me, her phone doesn't connect. I guess the car is looking for my phone. Any suggestions and/or ideas would be appreciated.
Thanks

Just in case there remain some Bluetooth issues, I offer the following two options assuming both phones are paired.
  1. First phone to get within Bluetooth range will connect. Adjust both arrivals accordingly.
  2. Turn off one phone's Bluetooth permission to connect prior to getting within Bluetooth range of the vehicle.
This will allow both phones to be paired but allow control of which phone pairs. I hope my understanding is correct.

This will be interesting, because I'm under the impression that the last phone to pair will always be the one that it looks for. Bluetooth pairing is usually by choice/permission although I realize you can set up some things to pair automatically when they are in range, such as your laptop and phone but I believe that's one of each. However, I'll be surprised if it can choose one or the other depending on who's in the car first/alone because it seems to me that that borders on being invasive. Do you want your phone to just pair with anything that comes in range? Of course not. Then don't expect the car or your phone to make an intelligent and automatic choice.

I'm going on my perception of how the car would handle what's basically a privacy issue so I might be totally out to lunch. Probably am.;)

We have our phones associated with our individual profiles so that when we're both in the car, we select the profile for the driver, which then selects that phone. If you plug in the cord to use CarPlay, that also selects that profile, and I assume it would do the same for Android Auto. As someone else said, if only one of the phones is in the car, that's the one it will choose by default.

If it's not working for you, be sure the appropriate phone is associated with the desired profile by going into the driver profile settings and edit which phone goes with that driver profile.

I you want to be absolutely assured that the driver's phone is primary, use AndroidAuto (plug in the phone) and charge the passenger's phone from the rear ports if that's necessary if both phones are in the vehicle. Bluetooth cannot tell who's in the driver's seat and as has been noted, there are sometimes anomalies with which phone syncs up as primary if both phones are within range of the vehicle, even if both are not inside of it.

Isn't the profile selected automatically by whoever is driving. The car has face recognition and it does welcome the driver by name and move the seat and mirrors to what was set for that driver. I assume it also selects the drivers phone. We don't use use android auto because the car has the big navigation screen and we only use that. The phone is only used for handsfree calling and answering.

While I can't say for sure, I doubt that the recognition feature is going to help with Bluetooth foibles.

Using AA/CP doesn't change your ability to use the internal navigation in any way, shape or form if you prefer it over the more current and dynamic navigation available through Google Maps, Wayz, etc. AA/CP provides the same hands-free calling experience as with Bluetooth. But using AA/CP absolutely insures that the phone active in the system for that hands-free use is the one associated with the driver.

I have this conversation with my wife when we head out into the mountians and it goes like this ..... Turn off your bluetooth. Done? Is there really any need to leave bluetooth turned on all the time? You're sitting with your phone in a car ... do you really need notificaitons to go to your watch?

As other have stated use the cable to override.

Yes, AA/CP both require tethered connection via USB. You both will need to choose between the preference of hiding the phone away vs the need to the driver phone be hands-free when you are both in the vehicle. Nature of the beast...

There are two different driver profiles, as confusing as that is. One is the facial recognition which sets the seats. The other is based on which Bluetooth device is connected. You can set Bluetooth priority and which phone is connected with each profile in settings.

Once both phones are paired and set up with the car, press the icon on the bottom that is the outline of a person. That’s the one to set up the different user profiles and you can tie a phone to each one.
