What does anyone recommend when the window reset/initialization does not work? My driver window goes down when I hold the switch (auto doesn't work) and only goes up 1" at a time.

I replaced the 2018 battery with a new gp34 Optima red top.
I tried all the way down, hold down for 5 sec.
I tried half way down then back up in 1" increments to the top and holding up at the top for 5 sec.
I tried half way down and holding up for 5 sec after it rises 1".
I tried starting with the window up all the way, going down 1" and back up 1" and holding for 5 sec.
I tried all of these in both the fully despressed (auto) switch pos) and in the partial depressed position.
None of this resulted in any change.

The window seems to be sliding just fine, no odd noises or slow movement on the way down compared to the other windows.

Ideas?

Thanks for that. I pulled the door panel off and checked the part number, called my local dealer and they confirmed I have the newest PN. They said if it's not working I will need to bring it in. Do you folks have any other recommendations before I shell out the cash to have Subi take a look?

For giggles I also tried using my free hand to pull up gently on the window when attempting to close as a way to test to see if maybe it needs lubrication. No matter how gentle or forceful I pulled I could still only get 1" at a time upward.

Thanks so much for this active community looking out for each other!

Also now that I removed the door panel completely and reinstalled it the driver's switch no longer operates the front passenger window or the rear driver's window. Only the wonky driver's front window and seemingly normal operation of the rear passenger's window.

Dealership here I come!

Thanks for the help though Walker.

each motor has it's own fuse, can also check those, just in case. On the dash there next to the steering wheel - fuses: 11 (drivers door), 21 (passenger door), 6 (rear left door), 16 (rear right door). Fuse 24 powers the controller switch in the driver's door.

It isn't clear from your posts--did you do the initialization procedure using the passenger window switch or just the driver's window switch? It's been a while since I have had to do this but I remember having to use the passenger side switch to get everything back to normal.

You would think they would put a note in the manual in the section about replacing the battery... but nope, nadda.

Initialization of power window (windows with one-touch auto up/down function) If the vehicle’s battery is disconnected due to situations such as battery or fuse replacement, the following functions are deactivated. . One-touch auto up/down function and Anti-entrapment function. Operate each window according to the following procedure in order to initialize the power window system. 1. Close the driver’s door. 2. Turn the ignition switch to the “ON” position. 3. Open the driver’s side window halfway by pushing down the power window switch. 4. Pull up the power window switch and close the window completely. Continue pulling up the switch for approximately 1 second after the window is closed completely.

Remember you have to do both windows from their respected switches. Not just from the drivers side.
Thanks for this answer. I needed it again today.

Changed battery today after 2018 OEM died several times. Weird thing is they the windows wouldn’t work afterwards. Weirder is that they slowly started working after trying several times, and moving kind of slow.
However the passenger front won’t work at all u less you use the switch on the passenger door...
Thoughts?

After 5 years and a few jumps, I decided to upgrade the battery. Picked up Duracell AGM Automotive Battery - Group Size 34/78 from Sam's for $200 and had them install it fully expecting to do the reset/initialization but was pleasantly surprised all the windows functioning.

I know this is an older thread, but, my 2017 Outback does this periodically. I took it to the dealership first time it happened and they claimed it was caused by the rubber on the door and replaced that.
It still does it a few times a year. After a few days it goes back to normal all by itself. So who knows why or what causes it. I do know it happens after its rained for a couple of days, even though it is parked in a covered area, could be moisture maybe.

I had disconnected my battery to change my sparkplugs. After reconnection I had the same issue. But after I restarted the car a few times it started to work. Later I disconnected the battery again (a couple of times) to checkout a bad coil and replace it and the same thing happened again. Working OK now. Strange.

See the post from March 13th of this year 2023, there's a list with links to service manuals, give it a couple minutes to load the manual you select.
In the beginning of the "repair contents" section of the Outback manual, on page 39 under item 6 in the listing for Power windows, there was a mention of how to initialize them, you can click on the page ref, and it takes you to page 5479, Power Window system.

I know this is a thread about windows functioning after battery replacement but I just want to mention that I’ve had to replace the battery in my ‘19 OB Limited several times and had to jump start it after finding it dead for no apparent reason. Found out recently the car battery had a parasitic drain on it from the data communications module. Subaru fixed it for free (after I pointed out this was a design flaw, not regular maintenance)

The first thing that I would check, would be the fuses.
