Chips on windshield

Has anyone else experienced their windshields getting chips easily while driving on highways?
My windshield has been chipped thrice and my state doesn’t provide for free windshield replacements.
There are no lines radiating out. Whatever hit my windshield just took off a bit of the glass. Seems like surface damage. Can be felt if I scratch my finger nail across it. Should I get a professional to put something on the surface or can I just rub some permatex over it?

I acquired one on my driver's side window the 3rd day of ownership. Since then I have probably 10 small pits on the windshield. I haven't done anything with them yet. I suppose it isn't the highest quality glass that manufacturers use as opposed to what older vehicles had. At least none of them have developed into spreading cracks seeing as temps up here go from below 0 in winter to above 100 in summer. Never looked into applying anything to them.

When I made a trip to Oregon I got some of those chips/divots like you in the glass. When I got home I used some of the windshield crack repair resin, put a small drop in the divot, placed a small piece of the plastic in the kit on it to flatten it out & hit it with a UV flashlight to cure it. I then used a razor to scrape it smooth. Can't really tell they were ever there!

The stuff that I had was left over from fixing a windshield crack years ago on another vehicle.

About 1/3 of the mileage on my 2022 Legacy, just under 48K total as of this writing, is from highway driving. So far, I only got a bunch of microcraters that could be seen when the lighting is just right. Perhaps this windshield is softer than on my previous vehicles, or maybe I'm just getting old and cranky.

I took a trip from Minnesota to Wyoming & Colorado this summer and my windshield ended up with a bunch of small surface chips that you really notice when the sun hits it at the right angle. I've used chip repair kits on previous vehicle windshields and they do work if you get on it before it becomes a crack, I hope to get around to doing that with my Subie before winter. I bought my '25 last year knowing Subarus had a reputation for windshields that easily chip/crack -- yeah, it's definitely a thing.
