Many thanks to @walker for pointing out a potential new software update for the 2023 Outback CP 1.5 Denso units.

Might as well have its own thread to avoid confusion with the CP 1.0 Denso software updates.

Here’s the TSB info for the 23s, someone needs to go buy a subscription and download the actual TSB and post it here:

Edit: since there was gripe not long ago about the other thread for 20-22MYs, I’ll keep this post updated with the most current TSB, as people provide them.

I tried to apply the new DCM update a couple of days ago, but now I get a "subaru starlink service update in progress" message every time I start the car up. The remote start no longer works and if I push the blue "i" button it gives a message that "telemetrics service in progress". The green light never came on. It looks like the DCM can't talk to the Subaru servers anymore. Wonder if I have to take it in to the dealer.

Hey gang, downloaded the new map version 48xxx, and my stupid car is asking for a 20-digit code, after inserting the stick, and clicking on 'USB' (vs 'Wi-Fi'); WTF? The car didn't ask me for a code before. And the website didn't ask me for a code either. I tried putting the code dispayed on the screen, but it doesn't take it, since I didn't use it before downloading the maps. What can I do? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Do I have to do the whole charade yet again, but since I was never ask for a code, what can I do differently??? Thank you.

That’s what happened to the GEN5 cars, once they were getting close to the end of the free trial period. You started getting prompted for the authorization code.

You still have to go to the Subaru maps website, once you login the second tab with the vehicle information should have a spot there at the bottom Where you put in the request code that’s displayed on the radio. Once you do that, it will show the authorization code there on the website.

I just updated my maps last week, same thing happened. But I managed to install the update. My subscription expires at the end of December.

Summary of what worked:
  • went to the update screen in car, copied the code from there
  • downloaded the updated maps to usb stick on my computer (Mac) by first entering that code
  • copied the code shown on the computer
  • went back to the car, entered that code there
  • installation took about 25-30 minutes

Thank you folks. I went back to the map downloader, and saw the very small link to get a code. Wrote the car's code, as requested, and got another code, which I put on my car, and the car took it... but installation failed (twice). Darn. So erased everything, and I'm trying to download it again, in case it'll do something different. But expect the same result, so while it downloads (takes forever), will check @ubi21 's link above, and see what it says. What a drag. Thanks guys. And I'm almost a year from expiration, so it shoudn't do that crap now IMO. Oh well. Will keep you posted.

EDIT: This time, instead of the maps downloading on my computer first, then on the USB stick, it directly asked me for the USB stick, so hope that was the issue. Last time it also went directly to the USB. Will try to install it like that, and if that fails again, then I'd read the link above, to see what it can be done differently (if anything). Thanks guys.

EDIT2: Did it all over again, and failed the same way. I tried with just in accessory mode, which is the way I did it last time (and then turned ignition off, actually, and it got done). Then with ignition on (I had a charger attached), and still same failure error. So I'm screwed, I guess. The only other option would be to run the engine, but that wouldn't make sense, since last time I didn't do that. I could try next time I use the car, I guess, but did everything else according to that link above, and still no dice. Comments welcome.

Well, tried to update my stupid car for the 4th time, and it was a fail again, even after rebooting the infotainment. So not sure what the heck went wrong. Used the same USB stick, but maybe it got bad. It was a metal one that got hot, so threw it away. Does anybody have a link of one that you personally used for this latest map update, and it worked? It'd be greatly appreciated. Need to order another, and see what happens. I think it has to be USB 3 65Gb, no? But looking forward to an Amazon link, so I can order one right away. Thanks gang.

Thank you guys. Funny I initially used exactly the USB stick linked above (the 64Gb Sandisk USB3.0), and it didn't work, so bought the other one, which did work. And now it doesn't work, so guess will try the one I have, and see what happens. Needs to be formatted as NTFS, right? I'm traveling, but will try it when I get home. Thanks again to all.
EDIT: I'm downloading it again, now on the Sandisk USB3.0 listed above. Map version 48534. I'm traveling 600 miles back home tomorrow, so plenty of time to install it. Ha ha.

Okay gang. Tried downloading the latest maps while traveling today, and the stupid car didn't even recognize the Sandisk USB3.0 stick one of you linked above. WTF? I formatted it in NTFS, which I believe is exactly what it should be, no? I'm baffled now. But I think last time it was the same thing, so I had to buy a different stick... which worked. But it didn't work this time, and I don't know why. At least it was recognized. This retractable black stick wasn't. Should I try formatting it differently? The only other option is 'ExFAT'. If it has to be NTFS, then I guess I could try the other USB stick mentioned. Thanks guys.

@JCtx

NTFS isn't required for the update to work. A number of us are using Windows and NTFS is typically the best option. There are a number of users here on Mac and they're likely not using NTFS as this is a Microsoft file system.

While there is a possibly that you're a victim of bad luck in terms of getting faulty sticks, I would start looking at the possibility of the source being corrupted, that is the map download to your computer. Try deleting the map data and downloading it again. After that, while the application is copying the map data to the stick, make sure the computer doesn't go to sleep. Odd things can happen when sleep gets activated. The copying process to the stick does take a long time, if you can monitor the progress that would at least eliminate the possibility that somehow this process failed.

If all that still doesn't work, then I would start looking at the usb port in the car. Since you have 2 ports, I would suggest plugging it into the other usb port, which on your car would be the USB C port. You would need a USB C male to USB A female adapter. You can find this at Microcenter or Amazon, or you might even have friends or family that have them lying around waiting to be borrowed. If that solves your problem then you likely have a faulty USB A port. I would get that replaced if you're still under warranty.

You guys are the best. Didn't occur to me to use the other USB-C port. And yes, I have all kinds of adapters, so used a 90-deg one, with the long retractable USB stick facing down the hole. And lo and behold, it not only was recognized, but it's downloading the maps now. Yeeey! Not sure why the USB-A is giving me trouble, but as long as the USB-C works, I'm not taking my car to a dealer. The port works perfectly well to charge devices, which is all I need it for, now that the USB-C port works. Thanks a million for the suggestion. I'll confirm that it worked. I just set the ignition in 'ACC' mode, started the download, and the system said I could turn ignition OFF, and it'd continue downloading (which I did). We'll see if it works. Ha ha. So didn't have to hook the battery to a charger right now, but will do after my other car finishes charging. Thanks again to all for your suggestions:cool:(y).

EDIT1: Downloading doesn't take effect with ignition OFF, as an FYI. My wife had to use the car after about 45 min, when the update should have been done (or nearly done), and it was exactly where it was before shutting the ignition OFF. I'll check it after she comes back. It should be nearly done, since it'd take about 15 minutes each way. Will report back once it's done successfully.
EDIT2: Job finished. Maps updated successfully. Thanks to all again. Having said that, my 15-yr old neighborhood still doesn't appear on the map, which is ridiculous. I had to save my house for navigation purposes as an off-road location; geez. That's why nobody who has the option, pays for factory navigation anymore; it's always crap, at least compared to Google Maps, Apple Maps, Waze, etc. I hardly use it anyway, so won't miss it when my updates are over in about 10 months. The great news is that CP is just like factory nav, even showing instructions on the dash, so no loss of convenience.
