Wasn't sure if this should be in the do it yourselfer thread...put it here because it is more infomational...if that is a word...well it is now :)

I was doing some reading and came across an intesting article. Seems that automakers are now using a new type of bolt...well at least new to me. They are torque to yeild bolts. You can read the article at Auto Tech: Torque-to-yield bolts - Autos.ca

This certainly changes things for the do-it-yourselfers out there. These bolts are to be used only once...and if you use them over again you are going to run into problem. I guess it would be nice to know where they are used...and why having the OEM repair manual is so important now-a-days.

Except in VW's, where they stick them everywhere. They typically have a rolled shoulder slightly narrower than the threads between the head and the thread. If you take one out like that, check up on it.

But I wouldn't even attempt any but the most basic repair without the Factory service manual on anything built after about 2000.

Ford used those in the 80s and taught all of use working on the 2.3 just how aggravating it could be to snap one off when you would not heed the warning and reuse the bolt. TTY also requires typically a certain torquing proceedure that goes beyond just hitting the bolts in the correct order. Most of it has to do with gradually bringing the pre stretch into the bolt before obtaining full torque.
