Electric Brake Controller for trailer towing

I just purchased a 2013 Premium Outback CVT and plan to tow my 1350 lb. pop top trailer. I had a MT 2006 Outback that I used for years to tow this trailer and had an electric brake controller and a 7 pin plug receptor which were installed in a hitch/receiver shop. However, when I went to this same shop which has installed 4 electric brake controllers on cars for me over the last 20 years and asked to have a Tekonsha Prodigy 2 controller installed, they took a look at the 2013 Subaru and would not do it. I have received the same response from 5 other shops. It seems it has to do with some problem they have getting brake and turn signal lights to work.

I am curious if anyone has actually had an electric brake controller installed on a 2010+Subie in Marin or Sonoma County, California, and if so, how much did it cost? Also, has anyone actually had U-haul successfully install an electric brake controller in a 2010+ Subie and how much was it and what type was it? Finally, has anyone done the installation themselves including installing the 7 prong receptacle? Thanks.

I just finished a brake controller on my 2012 3.6R Outback. It may be possible they made some changes on the 2013.
I did the work myself and used the following items from Etrailer.

118467 T-One Vehicle Wiring Harness with 4 Pole Trailer Connector
ETBC7 Brake Controller 7 & 4 Way Installation Kit - 10 Gauge

Etrailer has some good videos that show how it is done as well as good instructions.

I routed the brake wiring under the left side where the puddle lights are.

To get from the inside of the car to the hitch area I cut a small hole in the rubber grommet that the tail light wires go through.

They also make fuse extenders like this (Pico 0956pt Mini Fused Circuit 16 Awg 10a by Pico) that can be used to get to the brake signal wire required by the brake controller. There is a fuse labeled stop light in the driver side instrument panel on my outback. I got mine from Amazon.com

Electric Trailer Brake Wiring

Hello Lavarock:

Thanks so much for the information. It feels as if the installation is beyond my capability to do and the time would also be an issue. I am also aware that Subaru has also installed some sort of a brake/accelerator cutoff in the system.

Thanks again.
