External hard drive

Has anyone tried using a USB powered External Hard Drive with the Stereo via the USB port?

Since I'm one of the people having issues with the IPOD Classic locking up, I was thinking about going down this road. You can get USB powered external SSD Hard Drive pretty cheap.

I know a jump drive works, but they read pretty slow. A 128 gb powered external SSD drive should read faster than a 128 gb jump drive.

What happens with the iPod classic?

... but the usb doesn't seem to put out much power (charges slowly),
so probably can't provide much current to a USB drive.
The spec says a USB port should be able to supply 0.5 amp @ 5.0 volts
to external devices. That's marginal for a 2.5" mechanical hard drive --
some will spin-up powered only by a USB port. Some won't. It depends
on both the drive and the USB port (and maybe the phase of the moon).

OTOH, pretty much any solid state drive (SSD) will operate easily on
even the most anemic USB port -- and SSDs are vibration-proof.

Fair warning: I have no clue how well (if at all) an external hard drive
will work with a Soobie driver-distraction system.

I don't know if it would work but seeing as how my system takes about 5 minutes to index about 14GB of music every time I start the car...I can't imagine how long it would take if you used up a good portion of a 128GB drive. I also have the iPod classic lock up problem.

It's funny, I've had my car over a week now, but I still have less than 50 miles since I bike or take the bus to work, and over the weekend, went on a mini-vacation that had lots of straight flat interstate driving which is not good for break in (so we took our other car).

I've actually spent more time sitting in the driveway playing with the infotainment system. Note, I have the base model, but it is pretty similar to the premium/limited.

Not sure why you want a small hard drive because today's thumb drives are cheap for up to 64 GB. One advantage of the premium that I wish I had is it has a microSD card slot. You can get a 64 GB microSD for about $50, but I suppose that is $50 more than having an unused USB hard drive sitting in your desk drawer.

I have a 32 GB thumb drive attached (completely full) and there is no lag in indexing at all. The only problem is that there is no way to sort the albums (which are subdirectories). The file system on the drive is

  • Artist1
    • Album 1A
    • Album 1B
    • Album 1C
  • Artist2
    • Album 2A
    • Album 2B
    • Album 2C
  • Artist3
    • Album 3A
    • Album 3B
    • Album 3C

But all it shows is this list:

  • Album 1A
  • Album 1B
  • Album 1C
  • Album 2A
  • Album 2B
  • Album 2C
  • Album 3A
  • Album 3B
  • Album 3C

I am going to plug the drive into a Linux box and write a shell script to add in the artist name for each album (i.e. add the directory name to each subdirectory) to partially solve the problem, but still it would be nice to scroll by artist, then album.

The iPod classic worked great for me, though. No lock up. And I could browse by artist, playlist, etc. On a side note, I heard that with the Apple product rollout this week, they discontinued the iPod classic, which is too bad.

The bigger problem I found is there is no way to stop/pause the playing :mad: The only way I found was to switch to a different source. That's dumb. When you select USB/iPod, it starts playing a random (or not so random, don't know, it is the same each time, but not the first on the list) album while I scroll through to find what I want.

That listing structure is odd. I do have the "playing a random track" issue when I first insert my 32GB (3/4 full) thumb drive, but it lists the content by folder or artist or album (and a few more), and I can use any of those criteria to find what I want to play. If I leave the drive inserted in the USB port, the next time I start the car, the music picks up where it left off previously. I'll post a pic of how it looks this weekend.

If they updated the touch to 128gb, I could probably make that work. It looks like people are already jacking up the prices on the remaining classics.

Why even consider using a USB hard-drive when the largest USB thumb-drive that can be read by the subaru system is under $12 ? (Can address up to 64Gb)

Here is Subaru's webpage for the media-interface --> Subaru Media Hub Interface

Ok not knowing Dog Doo about this yet, is the Media Hub something you purchase? :8:

Just picked up my Outback Saturday. I have an external hard drive with 120 gb of music copied directly from iTunes. I would use my iPod but the jerk that borrowed it while I slept has not brought it back yet. The hard drive worked great in my 2013 Ford Sync system. The Subaru will play the hard drive, and search it also. However, just about every time the car starts it has to re-index. This takes 5-10 minutes. After that, all is good. During the re-index, the player goes back to the first files listed by alpha. This is quite annoying and disappointing since I love everything else about this vehicle.

Hope this helps. I would gladly test any suggestions anyone has to keep the system from indexing on each start. I guess a smaller drive would work, but the power of having that much music is just too tempting!

Success and it works good.

The limitation is not on the size of the device, but the number of total files per device (9,999) and per folder (255). There also seems to be no way to play playlists that I can see. Surprising.

I have 9,930 files total. The initial load time was about 3 minutes, but now is down to 30 seconds max each time the car is restarted. It starts playing right where it stopped when turned off, and continues in that folder.
