So, Mr. Subaru answered my original email, but when I asked if he’d look at my car — he never replied. 😕

I’ve made an appointment with another indy subie shop in Asheville in 2 weeks. Here’s hoping they can figure out what’s wrong.

If they can’t figure things out, I may be making a roadtrip to see @cardoc!! 😁

After some sleep it also occurs to me that he maybe did think you are serious. He probably gets messages like that all the time, but he no longer actually works on cars for pay. He now gets paid by advertisers on his channel while he just discusses when he did work on cars. He might still, but only as a side job to keep up to date and maybe get a pension.

If you come to Austin, be prepared for nutty drivers. At least you'll be in a Subaru if someone hits you.
I hope it doesn’t come to that, but I’ll put my big girl pants on, if I have to.

And… nobody better hit me or I’ll be freaking pissed! I want my car fixed, not totalled!

To give you a perspective, my BAJA got hit on the left front. Tore up the fender, put a hole in the bumper, destroyed the headlight pushing it into the battery resulting in a small piece of plastic sticking in the battery, but no leak, bent the frame to the core bracket, pushed the frame in by the battery and messed up the corner of the hood.

I fixed the frame, replaced the battery and headlights, as a pair so they match, found a fender in Dallas for $500 shipped, blue, b straighted the hood, kinda, so it would close and left the bumper alone for now.

The truck that hit it didn't have insurance.

How do you miss a high jacked Subaru?

Damn! I’d have been soo mad!

Obviously, they weren’t paying attention!

New shop said my suction hose was sucking air. Not sure how, because it’s new and the clamps and o-ring are new also. He replaced the o-ring again and said the pump is quieter, but is still making noise and might need to be replaced! It’s a new OEM pump! Wtf?!

How can I know for sure that the issue is the pump and not the rack, or something else?

The reason I ask this, is because initially the rack leaked from one of the metal lines on the passenger side and had to be fixed. Could that “fix” be related? I’m not sure exactly what they did to fix it, though.

Year's ago when the trusted mechanic replaced the second rack in my 05, the Pump was a little louder, it was still louder years later when I sold the car t 306,000 miles. Never leaked.

I would double check if the suction hose and clamps are installed correctly or possibly damaged. It definitely sounds like a steady amount of air is getting into the system from the suction side of the pump. A pinhole in the hose could be the culprit and very hard to detect. If the PS system is ingesting air it is going to be between the reservoir and pump since that is the only part of the system under negative pressure. Could also be the connection between the reservoir and suction hose.

When the engine is running, do you see any bubbles (even a small amount of them) in the PS reservoir coming from the return hose?

A new pump doesn't mean that it is not defective.
The only way I know to tell if it is the pump or rack is remove the pump and either install another or put yours in another vehicle.
The leak in the rack, if it was there when the new pump was installed could have caused some damage to the new pump if it ran low. If it was fixed before the new pump, and if the noise was not there before the new pump, than most likely not related, unless the rack itself has any issues that a new pump would shed some noise on that an old pump could not if it was lacking pressure to do so.

It looks okay to me, but how do I actually verify this?

I haven’t previously, but will check again in the morning.

Am I going to need to get a magnifying glass and Sherlock Holmes the suction hose, reservoir, and reservoir hose?

There was zero noise before the rack was installed.

The leak ruined my previous pump (it was a new OEM pump that was installed a year ago). I just replaced that pump with another OEM pump and the noise persists. Albeit a bit quieter.

I think I’m going to use the warranty and get another pump. I’ll also inspect the hoses for tiny holes and the reservoir for cracks. I guess I’ll be on the hunt for a magnifying glass in the morning!

That pdf, could be your issue. I see your car falls into the fix. I have no idea why my pump got loud, the trusted mechanic told me to watch it, as he was stumped too. As I said, mine was not bad over time, or I just got used to it.
