The oil from the filter drains back into the oil pan via the hole
Don't forget to apply new oil to the oil filter gasket before installing it.

My Bad:bonk:

So does most of the oil in the filter drain back into the pan when the engine is shut off? Doesn't seem to be that much oil in the ring when you spin it off.
