Outback XT 6 speed manual swap?

It will never work. Ever. The code in this vehicle is way too deep to not be completely integrated into the cvt. Im
Sure it will work - People said the same thing about my swap - "It'll never have cruise control" - "It will never pass US emissions". It works just fine but you have to be willing to break into uncharted territory.

You just start solving problems. Solve enough problems and you're done. That's all there is to it. Just like Mark Watney in "The Martian". Is it a financially good idea or prudent? No, but it's fun.

Cars have transitioned from simple mechanical systems bolted on to complicated computer systems, but that's it. Yes it's complicated and will give you headaches, and it requires new tools and skills that nobody has done before. Everywhere you go and everything you do, you will be the first one to ever do that. There may be compromises you decide to make, but if you're determined and can solve problems you can do anything.

Sure you can do it.

Budget $10000-15000 and 4 months minimum with the car down. And there's no guarantee it won't "ruin" the car but if you're smart and have money and time and determination you can make it happen.

It will basically be this thread but add custom fabrication for a bunch of parts, and a much longer struggle to figure out the CANbus with eyesight. Honestly eyesight may not be an issue either if it doesn't do much with the tcm on its own. The cruise control is pretty aggressive though, and it might make it unhappy if it's asking for lots of power and you need to shift first. I suspect X-mode won't be much of an issue but it's purely conjecture at this point. I haven't looked at newer cvt/eyesight subaru CANbus but I'd like to.

anyone find out any new information on this swap idea by any chance? or even just a duel clutch transmission from another car brand?
It should mate up to the TY856, you'll need custom fab work for some parts and a good bit of computer programming. I'd do a tesla swap first though...

ok, that makes more sense, you were factoring into long term ownership cost and also what you considered as fun. I agree with long term ownership cost, EV is cheaper when you hold on to them long enough.
I am not knocking you on what you call as fun because we just enjoy different things. I guess I haven't find any EV that will let me clip apex and trail-brake as analog as the STI for a reasonably price.
If you consider 3 years long-term then yes. STI has been a great deal if you want a budget friendly turbo car to zip around and hang onto lamborghini coat-tails.

I loved a perfect side-step downshift with the 6 speed... Made me feel like I was awesome. But this... Is something very different. Very pure and simple. I can't really describe it. Anywho, Get some shifts in for the rest of us!

Cheers!

I would like to know what electric car that is cheaper and more fun to drive than either of my Outback Wilderness and my STI?
I don't have anything against EV, but last time I check, cheap and fun haven't been together in any EV as of 2021....
You have to run the numbers for yourself and see where it ends up - If you don't drive hardly at all it doesn't make as much sense.

In my case, I had a 6-speed H6 outback, and it cost $400 a month in gas and about $4000 a year average in maintenance.

Leasing my Kia works out to about $350 a month including electricity and maintenance, so a little less than half. It also runs circles around the H6 and it's one of the slowest cars on the market. I thought I would miss that smooth screaming porsche flat-6 soundtrack and a perfectly matched 6 speed downshift, but I really don't miss it. Squirting around on a silent surge of power puts an insane smile on my face. I don't know why I waited so long.

That being said, model options are pretty skimpy at this point. And while the charging network for trips is good enough for road trips, we definitely need both more chargers and more charger users - especially out in the middle of nowhere (Wyoming I'm talking to you).

This is a little off topic - Sorry. The 6 speed is a great box and would be fantastic in an XT. Highly recommend. Best transmission subaru ever made in my opinion.

Just sell it and get an electric car. Half the cost, more fun to drive, nicer car...

If you're dead set on a 6mt swap though that's awesome. Get some data logs of canbus traffic and see what's going on with the CVT and it might be real easy to fake it.

Look through this then imagine you're doing it all for a 2022 with a lot more new sensors:

Good luck!
