Sway bar end links lifespan / replacement interval

Hi all,

My '06 outback apparently needs new rear links + new front links / brushings. It's the third car I've had this done so didn't think much, but then looked back and saw that new rear links + front brushings were put on just over 2 yrs ago (45,000 km / 30,000 miles approx). 90-95% of driving is on rural highway, a bit in town and on dirt/gravel/logging roads.

Does it make sense for them to wear out so quickly? My mechanic's going to comp me if they find the parts were faulty at all, but said it's not uncommon to replace them every 1–2 years when there's lots of back-country driving. We other outback + legacy had end links replaced around 150–200km and went over 300km no problem. So in my mind they should last 100km minimum.... thoughts?

thanks,
Dave

So, the links are definately more likely to wear out faster when driven on rougher roads, every bump, even cracks in the road, are an impact on the joints in the end link. Also there’s the possibility that the factory links were replaced with lower quality aftermarket links that just wear out easier

Sway bar links typically go bad when the rubber sealing boots fail/get damaged, let water in, contaminates the internal grease, and allow rust to form around the pivots. Usually results in a clunking noise when going over uneven bumps in the road as the joint surfaces wear from the lack of lubrication. I've installed cheap (ungreaseable) links before which have only lasted 1-2 years so it's definitely possible they may need to be replaced often if regularly used on rough roads. The greaseable links (Moog), in theory, will last much longer if grease is added regularly. I add a pump of waterproof marine grease to mine twice a year (car lives in the rust belt) and have had them installed for about 2 years now with no issues.

thanks!
My mechanic comped by about 50% of the parts / work even though they were 1 year out of warranty. Good of him.
I put Moog's on my first Subaru (legacy) 6 years ago and they were great. Current mechanic doesn't love my bringing my own parts, but I'll request they bring them in next time I need any end link work and get them greased with every service!

cheers,
Dave
