1998 Outback Wagon - value?

Hi all. Economic times have hit me hard and I'm parting out with my stuff to stay afloat. ( 2 college degrees, 15 years ICU nurse, and out of work? Who would have thunk? ) Anyway, I have this '98 Outback wagon that died midwinter (-10F) about 3 years ago and I thought for sure it was a timing belt, so I let it sit. and sit. and sit. I put some time into it this week and believe it's one of the head gaskets. I wish I had the resources to fix it, but like I said, my wallet has been stretched THIN, so this car has to go. But what is the value? I need the $ badly.

No photos at this moment, but I did make a video.

Any thoughts? Any help would be very much appreciated.

(Oh, I'm still driving my '04 Outback Wagon which I dearly love. :D )

Call a local salvage yard and find out what the scrap value is. Price it $500 above that value and hope for the best. I paid 1300 for a '98 with over 260K miles on it, but it runs and drives. I would think you could at least get that much. The sad truth is most won't want to mess with it. You may be better off to part it out, but that takes a lot of time and it sounds like you don't have that.

A non running 98 won't go for much. I usually offer $100 and to tow it away.

I paid $700.00 for a non-running 97, with higher milage, No rust, or dents, and a CD/radio. But, just sold it and my 98 for $500.00 for both, the 97 after i fixed it, dropped a valve and the 98 had definately blown a head gasket. But it really depends on the market in your area.

I paid $900 for a '98 Limited with a blown head gasket a couple of years ago. Leather, sunroof - all the bells and whistles. Had 203k but only two owners and everything was in great shape. Better body than that.

Post it for $500 and it would probably go pretty quickly. Parting out a car takes a fair bit of work, especially if you want to try selling big stuff like the engine and trans.

I only buy cars from below the Mason-Dixon now. I've tired of midwestern rust.

Sorry to hear Biff- a 98 with blown HG is essentially scrap value unless you find someone who wants to fix it or strip it which case it might be worth more.

Hope you have better luck soon! I was in that spot back in 02-03 nothing worse than having very current industry skill and talent and zero job. Really messes with your head and makes you question the true value of all your years working on various skill sets etc. If were not for my wife I would have probably moved to another state and started a whole new career in a totally different field probably as a one man business so at least I know when things are going bad and when the checks are going to stop vs some one else deciding my fate.

Makes me sick when I see yard crews spending 15 minutes per yard in my neighborhood and being paid 2-$300 a month for about 30-40minutes of work per month. I was shocked when the seller we bought our home for told us she paid $475 a month for the mow and blow service. Takes me about 12 minutes to mow the front yard - zero grass in the back just landscaping stuff! I figure that yard guy probably made far more than I did and didn't drop big money on college to do it. Who's the smart one? LOL hard to say really. ha ha

First offer is in ... $400. Will let it cook for a while.

Have a job interview tomorrow. Registered nurse in interventional radiology at a smaller local hospital. If I don't get it, I'll soon be living in my Outback Sport down by the river. :roadtrip:

(BTW, my WiFi connection right now is out of a Nissan dealership. Forgive me!)
