2011 Outback 2.5i Premium Headlight assembly replacement options

Took my Outback into the dealership today and I've recently passed 180k miles, so I have a good long list of suggested items to have done for preventative/routine maintenance.

One thing that really stuck out is my passenger side headlight assembly is quite yellow/foggy. I had it buffed out a year ago and it looked brand new, but it is quite yellow again and Subaru is suggesting I have the headlight assembly replaced. Unfortunately, they quoted me $819 to replace the right side headlight.

On parts.subaru.com I see the part for $377; watching a few videos shows that replacing the assembly is something I could do myself in the driveway so I'm inclined to do that.

My question is, should I just go OEM or should I buy some slightly cheaper aftermarket assemblies and just do both sides at the same time? Also, I see some pretty cool looking assemblies out there that have U bar fluorescents and such; can you guys suggest any nice aftermarkets that will upgrade the look of my 2011 and also be quality parts?

Thanks in advance!

There are plenty of options available for aftermarket lights on eBay. Most of them are sold in pairs and will come with bulbs. I put an ebay pair on the 11 Outback and they fit properly and vastly improved the clarity of light.

"Buffing out" also removes the UV protective layer. Without UV protection, the plastic will yellow quickly.

Considering the cost of replacement.... I would suggest buffing again - this time use the PROPER tools and techniques including finishing with UV protective coating.

The secret is to start with correct "kit" which contains everything you need. (Sandpaper, buffing-compound, UV-treatment)

It takes me less than an hour in the driveway to buff, polish and UV-coat both headlights. With my wife helping, it takes 1/2 that time.

I may do just that. If you have any links to the best kits for the job I’d appreciate it. I had Subaru do it last time and they charge $150, which seems a bit excessive.

a friend did his own with a kit and they looked terrible so I’m guessing all kits are not created equal.

thanks again!

I went with these with black surrounds instead of chrome from RockAuto on my 2011 Outback Premium: RockAuto
They came with all of the bulbs already installed (although I upgraded the low beams to LED bulbs during installation), just unplug the old headlight and plug in the new one (after removing the bumper cover and brackets, of course). About $450 with tax and shipping for the pair.

I also swapped out the fog lights for new all-in-one LEDs, which were super easy since the bumper cover was already off! :)

Dude that looks sick! Thanks for the link! For now I just buffed/restored my headlight and it worked great but I do want to upgrade to some black surrounds eventually because I live the look!
Do you notice any change in nighttime visibility?
