Lets face it, the FB20D and FB25D are a bit of a yawn fest compared to other Subi engine. Which may not be a bad thing for everyone. I'm more interested in trying to make the 6M models more enjoyable with modesty in mind. So I'll only be comparing against the FB20D which rates at 152hp 145 lb.-ft. I'd also be interested if anyone thinks that the manual transmission from these models isn't capable of handling up to 300~hp/torque. though I don't think I would ever imagine pushing it that far.

The first candidates that come to mind is the EZ36 or EZ30. If it fits... and fits well. I think this would be the easiest and most logical engine upgrade. Especially because they're naturally aspirated.

I've not worked in a Crosstreks engine bay, but they look small. I wonder if its too far fetched to do a FMiC setup. the best candidate I can think of for this type of set up would be an FA24F or FA24F

I'm not sure what ECU implications there would be. I don't know enough about all that, but I'm having fun with my ideas and I'm mostly thinking about the mechanical dilemmas. If either of these engine swaps were to be done, that'd be a solid power increase compared to the standard FB configurations. It seems like someone did a swap up in Canada with an EJ257 to make an STi Crosstrek, though they stayed with a TMIC. No details on that build though, just a picture and a title I found. But I can't find anyone who has done a swap with the Crosstrek chassis. I'd be happy to hear anyone's facts or opinions they have to share. I'm looking for some fun ideas to embark on in the future.

Thank you <3

I'm actually starting the reverse engineering of ecu's between my 21 crosstrek and a 21 ascent. The biu, and many other modules are the same. The main hurtle is the ecu on the ascent/all the fa24 engines is a hitachi unit and the crosstrek run a denso unit so I'm in the process of trying to achieve a vin and key code swap from one to the other. If not the other option is to create a man in the middle device that could capture the vin and key code verification message request on the can bus line and inject your factory vin and key codes. I'm still in the beginning staged of it.

2.5 in Crosstrek would be more than enough for daily. I would call either a yawn fest. CVT is a yawn fest. Theys are perfectly adequate. If you want fun try to get dual range 5mt swap done.
You will have very short gears on demand and that is far more fun aswell as useful. 2012-2017 Crosstrek was last subaeu to get it from factory in europe with 1.6L engine. But also FB20 Forester got it at the end of its production in 2011/2012.

As far as i know there is an imported in US for those dualrange transmissions from australia, mostly for offroading, but its also great for towing, mountainous terrain, aswell as being a redline chasing monkey without breaking the speed limit so fast, but it surely will feel fast. Also you could get oem trim and mechanism from european 2007-2011 subaru Impreza or same years forester as it fits against XV Crosstreks center console.

Dual range increases output the torque immensely at expense of speed in each gear, in 1.6/2.0L it reduces gearing by roighly 40-50%, 2.5 had lower increae most likely to not get too much torque into the transmission and potentially risk damaging it.

This meant faster rpm climb, mkre torque acting on you, while you're nor a menace to society at large. Australians also.make stronger version of those 5mt dualrange gearbixes for turboed and h6 subaru motors(all of them have identical bellhousings). Thow in a 5mt short shifter and stiffer bushings, some quality gear oil and you can have some fun.
It could be possible to have in on 2018-2023 Crosstrek aswell, but no intrrior for the dual range lever exists/fits unlike 1st gen Crosstrek/WRX so it would need to be some custom relocated lever.
