Observation

There are three options to connect iPhone when it is paired
Bluetooth
CarPlay
(forgot the 3rd one)

On my 2024 Limited it defaulted to CarPlay and phone calls and messages are controlled by the iPhone and Siri
if you change the connection to Bluetooth you lose CarPlay and Subaru controls phone calls and messages.

I am still trying to figure out how to display messages via CarPlay
Seems on one site you press the talk button and say "read message"
Haven't tried this yet
Pressing the talk button and saying "send a message to xxxxx" works but viewing what you sent is sill a mystery

Its a work in progress

I don't have wireless CarPlay in my '22 Limited XT but in my F150 Powerboost Siri reads them to me and asks if I want to respond.

Think I found the setting in Notifications>CarPlay
It read an unread message to me.

can hardly wait to see what the September Apple updates do to this system.

I saw a text message setting on my '24 somewhere, and there's also one on the phone, so you need to turn them both on, I'd guess. I don't use CarPlay, but might in the future. At least if the car's nav lets me down. I don't see any other reason to use it. I assume sound quality with Spotify is the same BT-A or CarPlay, no?

Hope the September Apple CarPlay software updates don't screw things up

CarPlay is not going to "display" texts other than who they are from/to. CarPlay (Siri) reads them out to you as long as the notifications settings are configured properly in the phone.
