I will be studying how to add cruise control to an IMPREZA TS , year model 2002. I am posting here as opposed to NASIOC because it is easier to upload photos on this forum.
It seems the cruise control system is completely independent of the ECU system - though on automatic cars there is some connection to the transmission control module.
Assuming the car has no wiring stock for the cruise control, the wiring and all components will be necessary. The main task seems to be filling out the 20 pins on the cruise control module.
This guide will be for a manual transmission vehicle without a security system - additional steps may be needed for an automatic transmission vehicle.
OPERATION
* The cruise control system automatically controls the vehicle speed. It allows the vehicle to run
at a constant speed without need for the driver to keep the accelerator pedal depressed.
* When the driver has activated the system and made a desired speed setting, the cruise control
module compares the actual vehicle speed detected by the speed sensor (MT) or transmission
control module (AT) with the preset speed in the memory, then generates a signal according to
the difference between the two speeds.
This signal is transmitted to the actuator located in the engine compartment.
The actuator operates the throttle cam as necessary to keep the preset vehicle speed.
Components to add
1. Cruise control actuator - electric motor which opens and closes the throttle
2. Cruise control module/computer - takes in signals about vehicle speed, operator input, etc and commands the cruise control actuator SAME FOR AUTOMATIC AND MANUAL CARS 2002-2005 IMPREZA
3. Cruise control switch - separate from the cruise control controller / lever - 83281AA000
4. Cruise control lever - driver input to increase / decrease speed.
5. Brake switch - the new switch has four input connections as opposed to two - so that the brake lights come on when you slow down using the cruise control
6. Wiring - I will get the connector for each component in the system and make my own wiring and use t-taps to tap into any existing wiring.
Critical components already present
1. Clutch safety switch - The cruise control and non cruise models have only two connections - you can use the current one
2. Throttle body - the throttle body already has the provision for the second cruise control cable
3. Vehicle speed sensor - provides current speed data to the cruise control module
4. Clock Spring - looks like the clock spring to the steering wheel is the same for cruise and non-cruise models of the bugeye impreza- 83116AE010
WIRING
The schematic appears to be the same for:
2002 Subaru Impreza (inclu. WRX 2,5 RS) - likely extends to 2002-2005 Impreza
2001 Subaru Outback - likely extends to similar year outback
1. Cruise control actuator
PIN 1,5,2,3 to the cruise control module
PIN 6 ground
PIN 4 - PIN 11 on cruise control module connector B94
2. Cruise control module / computer
The connector has 20 pins:
PIN 1 - pin 6 cruise control switch
PIN 2 - ? assume blank
PIN 3 - Automatic transmission only -
PIN 4 - Automatic transmission only - goes to the gear select lever (optionally via security system)
PIN 5,7,13,14 to the cruise control actuator
PIN 6 - grounded via "check connector"
PIN 8 - ? assume blank
PIN 9,10 -cruise control lever
PIN 11 - clutch switch, brake switch, cruise control switch - probably the main disable line
PIN 12 - Fuse #18 - ignition
PIN 15 - cruise control switch
PIN 16- brake switch (probably for the brake light)
PIN 17 - pin 5 on the obd2 (data-link) connector - for the Subaru select monitor diagnostics tool (appears to be a shared bus with the A/T control unit)
PIN 18 - pin 4 on the obd2 (data-link) connector - for the Subaru select monitor diagnostics tool
PIN 19 - Vehicle speed sensor signal input (MT) or line to A/T control unit
PIN 20 - brake switch
