When we brought our2017 Subaru Outback in because our battery died, our dealer told us our Viper remote start that was installed in 2018 needed to be removed because it is interfering with the electrical system and draining our battery. Has anyone else had this problem? It’s been working fine for five years.

I can’t say yea or ney to your question. I would ask for some kind of prof, if you aren’t able to test parasitic draw yourself. The big thing with the Gen 5 is faulty DCM causing battery drain, but I can’t remember what the first year of use was. There is an inexpensive fix for that, but you have to be a little handy to do it.

I’m in my mid 70’s, but I’ve worked on autos all my life. You would not need to crawl under the car to test, but I understand if it’s beyond your capability. $600 to remove it is crazy talk. I think they could install a genuine Subaru remote start for that price. Seems like even more than I had mine done for (Subaru Remote start). They could just disable it by removing the fuse. Find a different mechanic.

Find and pull the fuse for the aftermarket system. That should reveal whether or not their claim is bogus, which I figure it is. If you pay to have it removed eventually, ask them to give you in writing that they will reinstall it free when that doesn't work. Or just drive fast to another place because they should have come up with that idea, or they should have stated why they think this is the solution and you should have posted that info if you have it.
