Can I use one of these to troubleshoot and see if I have a bad sensor? Dealer also thinks I have to take it to them and get charged each time I do a 5 tire rotation so I was thinking about purchasing an Autel.

Gen 6 tpms is supposed to auto recognize which sensor is where after driving for a while, not needing a tpms scan tool.

It will only read tires that are spinning on the road and not the spare, but when the spare is put on, it should read it and stop reading the one that's stored. How long and fast have you been driving with the spare on?

Once they replace the bad sensor it should auto-recognize for future tire rotations without needing them to do anything. If the dealership is insisting that every tire rotation needs you to come in and get charged for setting TPMS that sounds wrong and I'd contact Subaru of America to let them know what's happening and to ask them to verify this in writing somehow if it's true.

Hi, first of all be sure that the spare tire has sensor installed. The Schrader 3076 is OEM unit Subaru 28103FL000FL00A for OB until 08/24, that no need to be programmed. Here some useful info:

Spare definitely has a sensor because its on the front left now and everything is working fine after the dealer reprogrammed. Problem is I think the wheel I put in the spare location has a bad sensor and when I move it back im sure it will have issues again. I just dont feel like going back and forth trying to get the dealer to fix it and get my 5 sensors programmed so when I rotate tires I dont get a code. I might just have a tire shop replace it because I hate dealing with the stealership.

The Autel TS508 will do what you want to do. I just received mine. I’m going to use the 5 tire rotation. I haven’t got the sensor yet. When I checked the sensors as a test, the Autel found them all and asked for the spare. I don’t have a spare yet. I’m going to use the Autel sensor for the spare.

I got the tpms light again yesterday. Hooked up the Autel today and got codes C2122 Transmitter 2 no data and C2921 Automatic Registration Abnormal. Dealer got C2921 and C2121 when I took it in.

I could also tell the dealer did not have the spare tire programmed so I did a relearn and added that.

So I had been playing around with the Autel quite a bit and I actually think the dealer is correct about only storing 4 sensors. When you use the Autel to do a position relearn it does let you scan the spare but the spare never gets written to the ECU as it still says NA next to OBD for the spare. What the new outbacks can do is Auto relearn so if the spare sensor is not hibernating it should auto relearn on its own. As you can see in the first picture this was after I did a manual relearn and you can see the spare was not written to the ECU as the OBD symbol is gray and says NA next to it.

If I find out any new information I will post it here.

That’s kind of what I figured.

Right now, I have everything I need except the tire. I’ll order it tomorrow. It should only take a few days to get here.

I know the newer outback’s are able to do an auto relearn. I’m not sure if they can do it if the sensor hasn’t been already added. I thought the relearn was just for the position. Hope I’m wrong. Even if not, it isn’t hard to do the relearn procedure via ODB.

How would people do 5 tire rotations and not have to do anything with the tpms system if that was the case? It only stores 4 sensors in the ecu at a time according to the Autel and Subaru but it can relearn automatically with the new sensor from the spare when rotated in according to some people on the forums. I will be testing this in the future as well.

Like mentioned though if I find new information I will post it here but this is what I found so far. There could be differences with my 2024 for all I know as autel only goes up to 2023 in the supported list. It worked fine for clearing the codes and doing an OBD relearn though.

I had a Kia Stinger with a set of winter wheels that had sensors and I never had to touch the tpms system as it would just auto relearn when I swapped them in.

Bit of an update....Testing out the passenger front now with the spare that has a new sensor in it. I kept getting code C2122 Transmitter 2 no data and had not ruled out the passenger side sensors yet. If this resolves my issue the dealer said they would replace that sensor as well. So far so good.
I do think the sensor the dealer originally replaced was bad as well.
