The general answer is that the outer surface of the seal should line up with the end of the guiding chamfer. One way to achieve it is to sandwich the old seal in between the new one and the improvised driving tool. A factory tool would set the seal to the correct depth.

 

I would take a close look at the replacement axle. Could be something out of spec there.

 

It passed the eyeball test but I didn't measure it. It is a Suby axle so I hope they have good quality control. I think I was pushing it in too far.

 

Thanks avk. It sounds like I did push the seal too far in. I watched several videos and it wasn't exactly clear. The way you explained it makes a lot of sense. I like your idea about using the old seal as a depth guide.

 

Did you use the correct seal for that side of the gearbox?

There are two different CV shaft oil seals.

One for the drivers side and a different one for the passenger side.

If you install the passenger side seal in the drivers side (or vice versa) the oil will be pumped out through the seal.

Yes i did make sure that it was the correct seal. I changed the seal again today. I really thing that I was seating it too far in. I will reply back once I see if I fixed it this time.

 

Those seals are easy to install too deep as well as misaligned.

 

I have driven 100 miles after replacing the seal and no leaks. I think it is finally fixed. I was pushing it in too deep. Thanks for all the advice.

 

I am about to do this so thanks for the heads up. Did you use a tool to install? If so which one / kind? I bought the seal but am on the fence if I should replace it or not, no leaks right now. Helpful link

I didn't remove the strut bolts only the ball joint bolt and used a pry bar to remove it from the lower control arm. Here is a good Youtube on the procedure.
