This guy has a very good video on what to do if you have the 4 cylinder - not that hard to remove if you do it his way.

 

Be careful of what you spray into your EGR valve. Carb cleaner can destroy rubber diaphrams and seals. Mechanical cleaning as shown by the video in post #2 is best.

 

Thanks you, but the 2012 Outback is not that easy to remove. It has a brass pipe going into it.

Yeah, here are some pictures to show how embedded the EGR is on my Subaru.

 

My 2010 Outback is showing all the signs of a dirty or bad EGR valve.

Im Curious -- Can you explain the 'signs' you are seeing and how many miles are on the valve?

 

350k on the valve and code generated 0400. Occasionally will stale when idle or when reverse.

Idle is rough too. Code will go away on its own after couple hundred miles.

There's a lot of hype about using a cleaner that doesn't require removing, but sounds like there are side effects.
