Are you using a blendmount, if so what one? Also, can you hardwire into the mirror vs running it all the way to the fusebox? I'm picking up my wilderness tomorrow and have an R7 to install with a Viofo A129 4K Duo dashcam setup.

Here are some photos. I couldn't go any higher since then I would capture the mirror mount in
the video. I didn't want to go any more left to go higher to stay out of eye-sight way.

I've been lurking here for a while. I recently replaced my 2012 outback for a 2022 outback with a dimming mirror. Has anyone tried adaptors that power the dimming rearview mirror to use to power the dashcam? This avoids running wires everywhere.

For my car model this is the adaptor that would work supposedly work.
Dongar power adaptor

What do you guys think about this?

I might be wrong on this, not having looked at that adaptor, but I believe you'd lose Parking Mode, as the dashcam wouldn't have a power source once the engine is shut off.

You are correct, since the outback stops powering the device after the engine turns off and the driver door is open.
For those curious, I did get the adapter and it works with the 2022 outback wilderness powering both the dimming mirror and my dash cam.

Just installed a Garmin Dashcam Mini2 in my 2022 OB Touring XT. Mostly as a temporary unit till the good ones arrive (gonna install Full HD in both vehicles once the weather is nicer).
Surprisingly simple to run the wires properly down to the glovebox for power.
Took approximately 20 minutes work for each car. Most time was spent trimming the stalk cover to hide the cable inside. I'm pretty anal retentive about my cars. Hope the pics do it justice. Feedback welcomed.

I talked with Garmin yesterday and they said a lot of the non-Garmin cables overheat so they could not recommend using Dongar power adaptor. Can you confirm/disaffirm this?

@ChaIto Can you take a photo of the adapter plugged in? Where did you plug it in? I got the same adapter and it didn't fit, at least as far as I could tell.

Ach. I think I figured it out. I bought a 12 pin adapter that fit my WRX, and the Wilderness is a 10 pin adapter. Oops.

Is there a reason, except for more wire concealment, that you removed the ES housing? Most of the installs I've seen just remove the stalk cover, make their connections and then double side tape the USB socket to the stalk cover.

I don't think he used a Dongar adapter. He ran a USB cable from the dash cam up the stalk to the ES housing/headliner, and then, I imagine, across and down the passenger side A pillar to the glove box outlet.

Last year I installed a RedTiger FN7 dashcam in my new pickup. Installation was a breeze with the hardwire kit.
While I don't love this camera because it's software is less than intuitive, it does a good job and good pics and budget friendly (under $200 w/256g SD card & hardwire kit)

So I bought another for the Outback this week from Amazon and the install begins today. This thread has been very helpful as I was concerned about possible eyesight interference.

Thanks to all who contributed. I'll try not to let the smoke out. ;)

I'm about to pick up one of these Garmin because it's a name brand that I know. Can you explain a little more or show how you ran the cable down for power and what cable you used. Thank you.

I didn't go with the Garmin, I purchased a Viofo A119 V3 Quad HD cam from Amazon. Fairly reputable brand it has way more features than any other dash camera at this price range of under $100. I also purchased the Viofo hardwire kit for $14.99 on Amazon. I used the 2 of the 3 empty fuse slots at the fusebox. One for constant power and another one for AAC. Before you start the work make sure to remove the negative on your car battery. Basically using two fuse taps, starting from fusebox you work your way up on driver's side. Remove the panel to the left side of your dash (part between dash and the door) also gently pull the pillar on the left, the reason you remove the battery negative is here, the side airbags located there you don't want them to activate, run the wire behind the folded side airbag and run it between windshield and the headliner by gently prying it in. You also need to remove the center console on the headliner, which held by two screws under sunglass holder, and 4 clips, 2 in the back of the dash console and 2 in the middle back of eyesight covers. You need to unplug the dash unit and run the wire from the same opening where the electronic rearview mirror wire runs. Make sure to plug your dashcam and decide where you are going to install. After mounting the dash cam, close up. Hopefully this information helps somebody. My installation worked out really good, you can barely tell there is a dashcam on my vehicle and doesn't interfere with my eyesight cameras. Viofo dash cam also has parking surveillance feature which this was the reason I purchased it. It has a motion sensor which activates to record an event 12 sec.before and after12 sec. after it happens. Comes with an amazing Sony IMX 335 sensor, night time recording is crystal clear. It's day and night 2K recording which is the sweet spot on dash cams. Many 4K dash cams claims to record 4K actually using the same sensor and electronically enlarging the image. Sorry for bragging about my dash camera, but I literally researched 10 days about dash cams and watched tons of YouTube videos before buying mine. Hope this helps, check out the attached photos, please let me know what you think. I am open to suggestions as always.

This seems like a super easy install for a front-only dashcam with no parking mode. I wonder if there's any downside since you've installed it?
Yeah the install was easy, and I just taped the extra converter thing on the outside of the black casing. I don't really care about parking mode, so its fine the way it is. It looks clean and it does what it's supposed to do, feed power to the cam when the car is on.

Hi All,

New Gen6'er here. I installed a 590X Blackvue cameras (front and rear) with Power Magic Pro on my '22 OB Touring XT as per instructions provided throughout this forum. Everything works as expected but I do have few questions as few things aren't perfect:

1). I used both of these fuses using fuse taps but somehow camera shuts off as soon I turn the ignition off. I set the Magic Pro timer to 6hr. Did I tap the correct 15A fuse? How long does the camera stays on before it shuts off - just curious?
Image

2). The fuse taps have 2 fuses one is the primary one and secondary is the one for the actual camera. Can you tell me where should I attach primary fuses (i.e. 15A and 7.5A)?
  • Is the primary one right on the wire or the one below?
  • I assume secondary fuses for the camera could be 3A which came in the box since camera doesn't need a lot?

Thank you all in advance,
B
