Fuel economy

Hi there,

I have a 2003 Outback MY2003 and the fuel economy around town is a pathetic 300kms max for a full tank.

The dealer says that there is no codes to alert to this on the cars computer readout, but a mechanic said that there could be a component ready to fail but not reading on the computer yet.

What do you think as longtime Outback owners?

Welcome Graham,

When you say a tank of fuel - how many liters does it take to fill up again?

Are you saying the tank is empty based on the fuel gauge? (which are sadly not that great in Subarus - I have an old British car with Lucus electrics that has a more accurate fuel gauge).

I just reset my odometer each time I refuel and say I will use 9-10ltrs/100km and with a 50 something liter usable tank of fuel at about about 500kms it will be empty.

Hey,

I'm checking out my mileage right now. I have gone about 375km and am nearing the bottom line on my fuel gauge. I think I will have approx. 400 - 425 km, and am wondering what the fuel efficiency should be... I'm going to measure mileage with a higher quality gas next time... I'll let you know.

By the way; I'm driving a 2.5L 96 Leg-Outback.

Cheers,
Mike

2006 Outback 2.5 automatic

My overall fuel consumption is 27.9 miles per Imp gallon / 22.3 miles per US gallon / 10.1 litres per 100km - so a 50 litre fill of regular 95 RON unleaded gives a range of 307 miles / 495km.

I run tyres at 29.0/27.5 psi as recommended by Subaru.

You're not getting the diesels, we're keeping them all in Europe !!

When I filled up last week I worked out that I was getting 14.65L per 100 kms, which is as heavy on fuel as a 318 V8 Valiant I owned in the 1970'S.

As suggested on this site, I run my tyres at 36 psi

Bring on the diesels.
Very surprised in these figures as I have never been able to get that high of a number ever - even around town.

I can normally plan on 9-10 L/100km.

Isn't that apprximately 2.5 gallons / 60 miles ?? If it is that's approximately 24 MPG, which is excellent.

I get over 30MPG on a total highway trip, and around 23.5 on a mixed town and highway tank, calculated, not computer reading. My computer is ALWAYS 1.7 MPG high compared to calculagted mileage.

KM -> Liters
496.6 -> 54.45 -> 10.96
472.5 -> 55.65 -> 11.78
507.6 -> 61.44 -> 12.1
472.7 -> 53.2 -> 11.25
446.4 -> 53.28 -> 11.94
603.1 -> 55.4 -> 9.19
527 -> 53.49 -> 10.15
565 -> 56.17 -> 9.94
514.9 -> 53.04 -> 10.3
499 -> 51.1 -> 10.24
509.4 -> 52.8 -> 10.37
528 -> 54.93 -> 10.4

387.8 -> 55.01 -> 14.18 NOV
320 -> 53.8 -> 16.81 NOV

This is just city driving, very little highway.
This winter, I did about 320km with 53 liters (16.8).

Sorry I should have converted L -> (US)MPG.

Very surprised in these figures as I have never been able to get that high of a number ever - even around town.

I can normally plan on 9-10 L/100km (26 - 23.5 MPG) I use the standard 93 RON Ethanol blended. I know the fuel between the two countires smells quite different too and the winters are no where as cold maybe that changes things.

I think Subaru should be able to trim the fuel computer in the car so it is more accurate

Have been very pleased with the mpg on my "new" to me used 08. The first 208 miles I put on it, I averaged slightly over 30 mpg with approx. 80% of the miles "in town". Alot easier on the wallet than the 04 4x4 pickup truck I got rid of !
Good God, that's fantastic! I can balloon-foot the car to just about 30mpg on the highway, but I've yet to see any better than 27-28mpg in "in town" driving.

I normally do 7 kms/L (about 14 L / 100km) in city use. I've got an automatic. Also noticed that the AC won't affect it much.

On my last roadtrip, 2.300 kms long, it gave about 10 kms/L @ 160 km/h (did a full tank at that speed slowing down very little. I'm sure that a lower speed consumption will be better. I will try it on my next trip.

I'de love it if I could increase my fuel economy. I'm in chile right now and a Liter of regular gas is about U$ 1.50

Hi Plate'oRibs

I'm lucky in that I don't put on my "in town" miles during rush hour comute as I'm retired. I think this helps me stay in a steady flow of catching green traffic lights which helps. I also try not to race up to red lights, but back off on the gas & smile as I see the 99.9 mpg display on the readout. The last 100 miles I put on were all in town & the computer is telling me 27.9 mpg. I sure hope this pattern continues!

I own 2006 2.5L Outback with manual gearbox. The combined fuel consumption is exactly as stated in technical specifications - 8.9 litres per 100 km. This is calculated (real) consuption, ie make calculations based on km driven and fuel purchased each time I visit fuel station. By the way - on board computer gives always -0.3 L/110km mistake.

Normally I drive 500-650 km until orange 'fill the tank' light goes on. I think the driving style makes difference. If you don't rush on red traffic lights and use braking with engine then -1 L/100km can be easily saved compared to your normal driving style.
