I've replaced hatch struts in several other vehicles but, at the risk of sounding like a total moron, I don't see how these come off at the ball and socket. Normally there's a clip that will allow the socket to pop off or a small retainer that needs to be removed but I see nothing. Can anyone be of help please? Thank you.

Alright I'm going to assume that I have to remove the strut, bracket at the top and the bottom ball stud as one unit and then replace everything. Seems like an odd design. Saw these going anywhere from $65 on Amazon to $80 from Advance and those both DO come with the bracket as well as the ball stud. However, neither Advance or Autozone had them in stock. The ones from Amazon also incorporate a retaining clip to be able to simply swap out the strut down the road. I called the dealer and they do have them in stock and sell for $29 per strut so I'll go pick them up in the morning. I'm hoping I don't have to remove the trim in order to get that braces off but it's not the end of the world if I do.

Hope this helps someone else out down the road as there wasn't much information out there. However...mods...feel free to delete this if you'd prefer.

I did this replacement a couple of months ago using the OEM parts. If I remember correctly, the strut + bracket comes off as a unit. Make sure you notice the orientation of the bracket. You can attach the new separate pieces to the car and then just snap the the strut onto the ball. Easy.

Those are pretty easy to replace. The oem strut ball and socket at the liftgate is a permanent unit. Use a 12mm wrench on the flats just below the ball and it unscrews from the body of the Liftgate. The new oem subaru original one the captive ball is threaded and just screws back into the body and then the bracket is bolted to the body of the car. Just make sure you get right and left parts as the are unique. 2 different part numbers. And your dealer price is good, mine wants $33 each.

When I replaced them on our old TDI I replaced the ball and everything. They just screwed out....easy peasy

Drove down to Heuberger this morning and they rang me up for $85. I said, "I spoke with someone yesterday and they said they were $29 a piece." The guy said, "I can make em that price super easy dude." Done. Installed in 13 minutes once I got home. So much better.
